Chances are, your engine doesn't need a rebuild.

Perhaps new rod bearings, valve seals, new gaskets all around, and other neglected maintenance.

Well, first off, reverse is going to grind if you just try to put it in. If you put in 4th first and then try to go to reverse then it will easy. Reverse is NOT Sycronized, only 1-5 is. that is why, its probably not the tranny unless it is every gear.

If you have oil leaks, find the leak and replace the seal. This does not indicate the need for an engine rebuild (rings, bearings, etc.). Search the Forum (top right of the page: search) for oil leak sources. Candidates are valve cover seals, camshaft seals, crankshaft seals, oil pan seal, oil pressure sensor, oil level sensor and others I may not have thought of.

So in other words pull the damn motor dont worry bout rebuiling it replace the seals and 10k later pull it again to rebuild it. it has had a hard life for 9 yrs it was drove very hard 180 miles a day at approx 130mph both ways. Its tired but still powerful. will break the tires loose at a 30 mph roll in 2nd just by gassing it no clutch
so on the trans just drain it and replace the fluids and hope reverse dont go out

If it still pulls hard thats a sign that it does not need to be rebuilt. You stand a greater chance of something getting messed up doing an unneed rebuild, listen to sdpatt; he pulls boats with is 270k mile SHO.

Bearings and seals can be done with the motor in the car.

Originally posted by buellm2: these engines will produce very good power with worn rings & valve seals, no problem, just add lots of oil. always carry 2 or 3 quarts. the compression test will look excellent. Bearings & valve lash will get noisy and something catastrophic will occur someday. You could buy a good used engine for the price of a gasket set.
