Long or short OEM strut bodies to use with Koni inserts?

For the new to me 92 that I have coming from western Canada, I've made a deal on a set of Koni inserts. I doubt that my car is going to have OEM strut housings in at this point, and anyway I'd like to get a complete set so that we can prepare them with the Konis and springs and be able to swap them out as assemblies.

It's been 10 years since I've played with these cars briefly, and don't recall whether I need to have the short or long strut bodies to work with the Koni inserts. I tried doing a search in this forum, and looking at old threads I'd bookmarked back then but don't see an answer.

Any guidance would be appreciated!

I picked up a set from Shomesomesho awhile back. It looks like he used the short body rear strut housing as I compared them to the ones on my stock 94 MTX. One of the problems it had was the rear koni inserts rattled in the strut body (like they mentioned in the thread). Mike at Shosource had some collars machined so they took up the small gap between the insert and stock strut casing. If you run into this issue, you check with Mike to see if he has any more of those collars. He mentioned he made some extra sets back then.

It really depends on which Konis you have coming.

The fronts are 8641-1287. They are the same for all years.

The rears were 8641-1288 from 89-mid 92. These are what require the long strut bodies. In mid 92 they switched to 8641-1323. These are the short body ones.

You can use any struts that you can find. They don't need to be OEM. Just determine what rear konis you have and then go to the junk yard and pull some struts. The only issue that you might run into is what was mentioned above about possibly needing the rings. Koni at some point started including the rings with the struts so it's possible that you might be able to find some just by posting a WTB but it's really going to depend on what struts you get to determine if you need them or not.

Hmm ... buying some from a member here that are NOS from a long time ago, numbers he has are 8641-1268S and 8641-1269S according to his old purchase invoice. Short of contacting Koni NA, anyone recognize those numbers?

Koni NA got back to me quickly by email after I did an inquiry through their website. Apparently the numbers I'm getting are an early version for our cars.

Keep us posted. If they are early versions then I would expect that you will need the long body strut housings.
