Hey Gang,

My '91 has chronically had very long crank times when trying to start her up. She ALWAYS starts, it just takes some time.

If I leave the key "on" for a few seconds before firing her up, the crank time is closer to what should be normal. OTOH, I don't hear a 'whine' as you all have described in the past. Then again, my hearing sucks. Just ask my wife. wink

Is my fuel pump toast, or what?

half-way there, I think.
Long starts are indicative of a bad check valve in the fuel pump. You could try turning the key on and off a couple of time before starting. If it starts right up, then that's your problem.

This happened to me also. However, even with my new fuel pump, I still have the same symptoms. I formed the habit of priming my fuel pump before every start, but if I don't once in a while it will take another second or so.

I don't think it's my CPS since my car does not randomly stall nor does my waterpump leak fluid all over the damn thing. What else can I check so I don't have to prime my fuel pump before starting?

The check valve is not part of the fuel pump. It is a separate part on the fuel return line and must be ordered and replaced separately unless you are replacing the complete pump/sender assembly.

Steve,

The Check valve is part of the Fuel Pump. The other thing it could be is the Fuel Pressure Regulator. Contrary to popular belief the little duck bill flapper (orange thingy) on the return in the tank holds no pressure.
