Adding Loctite 294 to the camshafts may extend the life of the bond between the camshaft gear and the tube. This procedure is appropriate for engines not experiencing upper engine valve train noise. If such noise is present, replacement of a camshaft may be required.
NOTE: Loctite 294 MUST BE OBTAINED LOCALLY THROUGH AN INDUSTRIAL SUPPLY SOURCE, OR USE THE LOCTITE WEBSITE:
WWW.LOCTITE.COM GO TO THE "COUNTRY" "DISTRIBUTOR LOCATOR" USE PRODUCT NUMBER "27935" AND ENTER THE ZIP OR POSTAL CODE.
Remove valve covers as per Workshop Manual Section 03-01C. Measure the gap on all four camshafts as per Figure 1. If the gap is wider than 0.047" (1.19mm) on any camshaft, only the out of specification camshaft must be replaced as per the camshaft replacement procedure in the Workshop Manual. Proceed with this repair on all other camshafts.
Place lint free towels under the camshaft sprocket area and clean between the camshaft and sprocket using brake parts cleaner or equivalent to remove any engine oil, (see Figure 2). Blow the area clean and dry with shop air. Perform this procedure two times for each camshaft and perform on all four camshafts. Remove the towels from under the camshaft sprockets. Hand rotate the engine one complete crankshaft revolution until the cams have turned 180 degrees and perform Step "1a" again to clean the opposite side of camshaft sprocket area on all four camshafts.
CAUTION: FAILURE TO CLEAN THE CAM TUBE/SPROCKET AREA WILL RESULT IN POOR ADHESION OF THE LOCTITE MATERIAL.
Raise the left (drivers) side of the vehicle approximately 18" off the ground to insure secure *********** of Loctite 294 through the camshaft tube and sprocket.
Use a heat gun and apply heat to each camshaft gear for 30 seconds, place towels under the sprocket and over the chains, then immediately apply Loctite 294 to each camshaft per Figure 3. Perform this same procedure on the other three (3) camshafts. Remove the towels from under the sprockets. Rotate the crankshaft one revolution, place towels under the sprockets, and apply Loctite again to all four (4) camshafts to saturate the opposite side. This will require approximately 0.34 oz (10ml) of the Loctite 294 to complete application to the four (4) camshafts.
CAUTION: IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT NONE OF THE LOCTITE DRIPS OR WICKS ON TO THE CHAINS. IT IS POSSIBLE FOR THE LOCTITE TO "LOCK" THE CHAIN LINKS, RENDERING THE CHAIN INOPERABLE. ANY LOCTITE SPILLED ON THE CHAIN SHOULD BE IMMEDIATELY WIPED OFF AND THE AREA CLEANED WITH BRAKE PARTS CLEANER. CHAINS SHOULD BE CHECKED AND CLEANED AS NECESSARY WITHIN 10 MINUTES OF THE APPLICATION OF THE LOCTITE.
Clean any excess Loctite from each camshaft and sprocket using a shop towel, remove any towels previously placed under the camshafts, and reassemble the engine per Workshop Manual Section 03-01C.
Change oil and filter.
NOTE: THE LOCTITE 294 WILL BEGIN TO HARDEN WITHIN 10 MINUTES OF APPLICATION. FULL STRENGTH IS ACHIEVED IN 24 HOURS. FOR THIS REASON AND MAXIMUM EFFECTIVENESS, THE VEHICLE SHOULD BE PUSHED OUTSIDE AND LET SIT FOR 24 HOURS BEFORE STARTING THE ENGINE.
