You have bigger problems if your P.T.U. is slipping.

There's no way it's "slipping". It's a 100% gear based setup. There's nothing to slip. It either works or it grenades itself. There's really no in between.

Ah, i see. Gotcha. I never took one apart yet. I thought it was clutch or viscous plate based. Good to know that its not slipping. Im just worried because im at 72k miles on stock fluid in it with tons of playtime on it

Ok well you know the issues with these cars. You had enough wrenches turned on it already for operator related issues. Maybe just change the fluid nowish or pay someone to do it.

There IS a viscous coupler at the RDU that the 4x4/AWD module uses to send the appropriate amount of power to the gears.

Viscous couplers are fun till you get their jelly to hot. Then it wont work no more

It's a clutch pack actuated with a magnetic clutch. I do forget if its ball and ramp or what. But the unit is sealed and does have a lubricant in it. When I think of a viscous coupling I think torque converert.

Really, I just wanted to make the Jam joke. Wonder if I have any peanut butter. Hmmm.

My 90 miata has a viscous lsd that still works. Sucks that its not serviceable but somehow it still works. I drop the clutch a few times daily. 230k on it. Usually heat destroys viscous couplers because they are sorta hydraulic because the heat pushes the 2 disk clutch gear type things together and makes it spin both rear tires

No nevermind i had to learn. The fluid dosnt push the disks the fluid is thin and then the heat makes the silicone based fluid get real thick and its in between the plates and sorta makes it all 1 because the fluid becomes solid when hot and thats what makes it a posi when doing burnouts and a normal diff when running cool
