Hey guys,

My 89 is acting up a bit with high idle and LARGE idle surges (about 300 rpm surges) The lowest it has gotten for idle is about 1000-1100 (at bottem of surges) its kind of random. if i rev it the rpms dont come down right away, it takes about 15 seconds to get back to idle(surging). seldom tomes i will get a steady 1k rpm idle but only for about 10 seconds where it starts surging again. also, every time i start my car it stinks of exhaust from the vents... mayby just because its cold out some seal is getting smaller and letting echaust get through? anyways, give ma a shout with any posibilitys or fixes. thanks in advance

I'm going to say that it's your Idle Air Control (IAC) valve. Your idle is set at the factory at ~700rpm, so the fact that it doesn't go below 1Krpm tells me that it's stuck open. Try replacing (or cleaning) it first, before you do anything method. Cleaning method: Remove from car, spray very liberally with engine cleaner in all open orifices.

The IAC is just to the left (from the front of the car) to the throttle body. It's mounted to the other side of the intake from it. It's a little tube-looking thing with a 2-wire connector at the aft end and a black thing sticking up from it. It's in there with allen screws - the bottom one's a bitch to get to.

Good luck!

Edit: have you seen my sig? That's what it's talking about.
