knock around front main.

I am getting a knock at idle around the front main area. It just started making this noise recently , the car has 158,000 and I know it's time for rod bearings. When I hold a pipe to my ear and having the other end of the pipe by the front main , the knock is the loudest. Any thoughts on this?

Pull your crank dampener before it is too late (which could be tomorrow). At a minimum, retorque the dampener. Sounds like a very good chance for crank cancer.

Consider it parked until the mystery is solved, I will go re torque it now and see that makes a difference.

You were right, I torqued over 100 plus ft lbs and the noise is gone. I will buy a new torque wrench tomorrow and get it to specs. Mine only goes to 100. Thanks for your help!!!

It would probably be a good idea to pull the damper off and check the groove in the damper and the keyway to make sure nothing is damaged. Also the timing gear needs to be checked as well but then you will have to basically remove the timing belt.

Whats the best way to torque the crank bolt down on an ATX without the motor spinning?...put a strap wrench on the dampener to hold it?

You could do that or you could do like the pic below. I got this from Bizzy back when I had my 95 ATX and I had to put a new harmonic balancer/crank pulley on. Where it shows in the pic of the C-Clamp, put a very large socket or something metal between the C-clamp and the bottom edge of the fender well, something at least a couple of inches in diameter and at least 4-6 inches long, that won't crush when you apply the 115-125 ft-lbs of torque to the pulley. You will probably need someone to help you hold the socket or metal object while you turn until it meets the fender well, then torque away, and that should do it.

Anyone else have anything to add?

...that's what I've always done, never a problem. Plus loctite on the bolt.

Doug, I believe you and I are the only one's on here that use loc tite on the crank bolt.

P.S. I never had one come loose yet.
