just a little project I did today.. has definitely changed the attitude of the engine.. working great with my SCT no secondary's tune that I've been running for awhile. When I hit the throttle wide open for the first time a smile came on my face. This was worth the time to do... just follow the instructions ... http://v8sho.com/SHO/kncone.html

Nice mod. Did you notice other gain aside from improved sound?

The engine feels more responsive... it's working well with my tune and the exhaust that I have... I feel its, well worth it.

If this cone is not outside of the engine compartment you probably are losing HP. The underhood temps are atrocious.

I have to agree. There is a very positive psychological effect from the sound that tends to fool most people into thinking things are better, but under measurement, taking air from inside the engine compartment is a losing proposition. If you want to improve the air intake situation, you really need to do some form of Porterization that pulls in cold air from the wheel well.

I agree with having the extra heat under the hood can hurt it but pulling air through a cone filter seems like it would pull more air than a smaller hole that the stock filter housing uses.. I will just give it try for awhile :)

Underneath a SHO somewhere...

I've had my ShoShop CAI on my 98 SHO for well over 10 years. Love the sound when the secondaries open up. Never felt a loss or gain with the butt dyno.

Nice. I just got a filter like that, and am going to have to try it out. I understand what people say about underhood temps, but I read on the old V8SHO.com site that when the car is rolling, the temps at the intake filter was only a few degrees above ambient, so I think I should be OK.

Hopefully it should be better than the swiss cheese air box I have in there now.

Actually, if you hook up a Scangage II to the OBD connector you can do real time measurement of the intake air temps, and I assure you, once the engine is warm they are way, way above ambient. NebraskaSHO above is right, the under hood temps become atrocious very quickly and in fact end up robbing you of a good deal of horse power. Cones have a good sound effect, though, and for many that is what they want.

Interesting. I wonder where the old V8SHO.com group got their data. It seems weird that they would show it was OK, when in reality it probably isn't. Oh well. Anyone have a nice MAF adapter for a gen 3 so I can make a fenderwell intake?

Ron Porter came up with a cheap and easy way to do this forever ago, and you can likely find a description by poking about looking for 'porterization'. I did a modified version of this even more simply. I got a couple of feet of smooth, 4 inch radiator hose for a big transport truck at one of the truck parts places, and a stainless clamp, plus 3 stainless short screws. Cut the sax intake off of the air box about half an inch or a bit more away from the airbox to leave a lip you can attach to and then remove and throw away the rest of the sax, it has become waste plastic.

Measure from the air box lit to a couple of inches inside the oval cutout into the wheel well both on the long and short sides, as it will be at a pretty significant angle and you want the part sticking into the well to be inserted about the same amount front to back. Cut your radiator hose with that angle on one side and at 90 degrees on the other side to fit onto the lip of the air box. Slide the angled side into the wheel well cut out, and the flat side over the air box lip. Use a drill to put three holes in the end over the lip and into the lip itself at 120 degrees apart and use your three stainless screws to attach the hose to the airbox lip. Then use the radiator clamp to go over the screw and lip attachment area, mainly to make it look more finished and clean, though if you tighten it down enough, it serves as somewhat of a backup for the screws, though its not really needed for that.

There you go, cold air to the motor and without the flow restrictions of the sax. :)

Nice to see the input from everyone... I still have this installed and haven't had any problems with it... currently the temps here have been dropping into the single digits and I am driving only 11 miles to work and home. The car runs well and has good pick up and of course all my friends and co workers love the exhaust sound.
