I just finished the front 60k on my sho. Everything went smoothly except now i have a whining noise coming from what it sounds like the timing belt. It increases as the rpms climb it almost sounds like i have a supercharger. Could the belt being to loose or tight cause this? Also can I access the tensioner without taking the lower timing covers off again?

Thanks, Matt

Timing belt is too tight.

When you go to tighten the timing belt:
- Loosen tensioner nut.
- Turn engine 2 turns, and stop at TDC.
- Tighten tensioner nut to 40 lb.ft.
- ???
- Profit!!

Teh MTXs have an access plate on the lower timing cover specifically for futzing with the timing tensioner. Also, lmao @ profit! been a while since I heard that...

Also also, my 95 ATX does the same damn thing. Only, it has an automatic tensioner. Go figure, huh?

Did you follow the FSM procedure for tightening the timing belt? Loosen nut on tensioner. Rotate crank until yellow mark on edge of crank pulley (not white mark) aligns with 0 degree mark on lower timing cover. This is about 30 degrees before TDC. Tighten nut. It could also be that the tensioner needs to be cleaned and spring lubricated so it sets to the proper tension.
