After owning a slew of Z28s, Trans Ams, Vettes, and the like... I started a family and moved to 4 door daily drivers. Started with a 1997 Regal GS, and a few years later moved into a 2005 5 speed Saab 93 (GM ecotec turbo). While those cars were fun and functional, I decided I wanted something more. Remembering an old brochure my Mom showed me back in '96 about the newly redesigned Taurus with a never been offered before V8 engine, I recalled Ford had reintroduced the SHO starting in 2010.

So I started looking around. I found a Magnetic Metallic 2017 model that was fully loaded (except sunroof), and had the Performance Package, about an hour away from me. Drove down with the family, and drove back home a proud new SHO owner. Car had 21 miles upon purchase and was absolutely amazing. This car was definitely a cut above the Regal and 93 I had owned previously. Finally, THIS was the 4 door vehicle I was searching for, with the performance that matched my old sports cars.

While first and foremost, it is my daily driver, I do plan on taking it to the drag strip to see what it's capable of. I'm gonna wait until late October/early November to take advantage of the negative DA that Cecil County Dragway is known for that time of year so I can get the absolute most out of the car. After that, its time for a tune and supporting mods during the off season.

Had a couple of questions:

1) I had heard that Ford limits the performance during the break-in period due to software programming, and that after a thousand miles or so, power improves a bit. Is this true?

2) Does the Performance Package really limit the quarter mile times of these cars once modifications reach a certain point due to the gear differences?

3) With the AWD setup on these cars, are drag radials beneficial for a stock car? Or would they only become an aid for modded ones?

4) Would an external trans cooler be an asset?

Thanks in advance guys, and can't wait to be a part of the forum

PS, heres a quick shot of the car the day I took her home:

Congrats and welcome.

1. Dont know
2. The small advatage the gearing may give the PP compared to non-PP goes away with a tune. You will have traction issues sooner with deeper gears but with just a tune it's not really an issue.
3. Stock and even just a tune you shouldn't have that much of a traction issue.
4. PP already has addional coolers. I would datalog and see what temps are and go from there.

Also I didn't know they still came with flowers.

Flowers? You mean the wheels? Yeah... I'm 50/50 on their looks. However, everyone I've shown the car to, seems to like them. Oh well, it's too expensive to change them out, so I guess I'm keeping them for now

Yeah I was referring to the wheels. Last couple years I've seen just the 10 spokes like the Taurus limited got.

On your #2 question, the lower gear ratio of the PP may encourage your car to shift one more time before reaching the quarter mile mark. That could have an effect on the quarter mile time. But really it is a theoretical subject, as wheel spin and countless other things come into play before that becomes an issue.

2016 owner here. Congrats on the car. Maybe I'll see you at Cecil, my favorite track. I run a Mustang but would not mimd seeing what the SHO does on the fastest track in the east. Never heard of a limit form Ford. Car comes with cooler son the PP package. Not sure you will need drag radials, car sticks pretty good with the AWD. I love the snowflake rims...just saying. Good luck.

Thus far, DR's have proven unuseful on this platform, as there's no real way to warm them up at the track in order to achieve that desired "stickiness".

No burn out due to AWD = DR's being a waste of $$$.

Those that have tried it in the past, reported it never hindered the performance. But the expected gains never panned out either.

Thanks for the info guys. Bummer about the drag radials, though... they really helped on my old RWD cars. Didn't even think about not being able to do a burnout at the line with the AWD.

Julian, I plan on making a SHOing at Cecil when the temp starts to drop later this year. Hope to see you there.

Anyone know what the record for a 100% stock Ecoboost SHO is at the dragstrip?

Edit: Seems as logged into this website, the fastest went 13.76 at 101.40mph on a 2.08 60ft.
Over on www.dragtimes.com, however, theres a guy who went 13.49 at 103.62mph on a 1.98 60ft. Run was done in great air at Capital raceway.

Looks like I have a goal to work towards this fall

Let me know when you go, I would love to see what it runs also. As far as sticky tires. I was playing in the pouring rain yesterday and still managed 0-60 times of 5.6 seconds. These cars really hook in crap. lol

The Flower petals are standard and at least as of 2016 models the 10 spoke were optional. I got mine from Tire Rack and put my Flower petals in the garage. Good purchase and nice color. Welcome aboard!!

Me and my buddy both have the exact same car with the exact same mods, mines a PP his is a NON-PP.

I am a car length faster then him from 0-130

I don't know what anyone talking about when they say the "Difference goes away with a tune" because this is not true from my experiences.

Especially de-tuned, the non-pp feels so slow in comparison.

Long been proven for many years now, that the Non-PP has been faster than a PP equipped SHO, once a tune is applied.

That variation in gears is a placebo & this has been debated numerous times previously.

Idk, just telling you how it went for my PP vs a NON-PP.

We have identical mods, nothing different.

I pull a car out from a dig, and from a roll at any speed.

Nice car. I ordered a 2016 PP without the sunroof and massage seats, but they stopped production for a few months right when my order went in. Wound up getting a car from an Upstate NY dealer through my local dealer (salesman drove up and got it). Has the sunroof and massage seats, but they made me a deal I couldn't refuse ;)

Anyway, I like those wheels. Never thought of them as flowers, because they aren't - the sharp corners in the design don't look like flowers would. Maybe more like something you'd draw with this though: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spirograph - lol - if anything, more like a spider.

I like the steeper gearing of the PP - although I've never driven one without it - I live in Sport mode - always running in 5th gear on the highway, never notice any difference in fuel economy between that and non-sport mode, and I like the extra engine breaking even at highway speeds.

Spin up the turbos by power-braking up to 1500RPM or even a little higher, and I can pull away from anyone who's tried. And that's stock. Maybe my reaction time is better than theirs. Here on Long Island, there's hardly anywhere I can keep pulling for any length of time so it's hard to say what it would do with more room.

But yeah, NICE CAR!

@ Ec0b00st.....

I hear ya. Not discounting your experience in any way, just provided a small glimpse into the past 7yrs worth of ownership, debate, etc. that has transpired over the years.

Can't discount the abilities, or capabilities/differences between one driver, to the next as well.

Either way, you own a techno filled rocket sled, that is of a rarer breed amongst the sea of so many other models out there. Enjoy!

Yeah, I hear ya.

I test drove both models, and the non-pp just felt sluggish to me vs the PP stock.

I thought the difference was the gearing requires an extra shift to 60mph and in the 1/4 not that one was necessarily faster than the other?

LOL @ noone wanting to play with you.

That made me giggle snort. Let's just say I've disappointed a helluva lot of Vette, Porsche, SRT owners etc.

I'm playing in the Skyline GT-R & Hellcat territory. So yea, I could be to blame. LOL. All in good fun. I always and consistently make it a point to give the competiting adversary a friendly thumbs up afterwards. However it never fails that those (losing) owners are more butt hurt than anything. So silly.
