Rockledge
Pluggin' away
OK, so while I'm waiting on a couple of reinforced mounts from SHONUT so that I can wrap up a clutch job, I've decided to continue to work on the front suspension a little bit while I have things apart. I'm going with Eibachs and Tokicos all around with new mounts, bearings, washers, etc. The dust boots on the car look to be in good shape and my intention is to re-use them.
Well, late this afternoon I was able to pull the drivers's side front off and I found that the "jounce bumper" is completely shot. To be honest, I hadn't even thought about those little buggers. I realize now that I'm probably going to have to replace them all too, but I have a few questions first:
1. What exactly is the purpose of the jounce bumper? I assume it acts as a sort of cushion or bushing when the strut "bottoms out"?
2. Do I have to use the ones from Ford or can I get them at a parts store?
3. Or how about this: Can I use a couple of my SHO's old rubber strut rod end bushings for the bumpers? I just happen to notice they are about the same size (maybe a little shorter but the same width) and fit on the strut in the same manner as the bumpers do.
TIA
