I just got my car last week (http://www.shoforum.com/showthread.php?t=37853), and the JBL system is intact except, the previous owner had an aftermarket HU, but installed a Ford AM/FM HU to sell it. I checked the wiring and he just didn't connect one of the harnesses, I did, and now it works, just now as well as it could. I now have two other smaller sets of wires, a larger square one, and a 6 wire rectangular one, both leading to nothing. Are these the two connectors for a CD slave? If so, does anyone know if there are other Ford models that had a similar system that I could cannibalize to replace the broken connectors, and CD player?
I would appreciate it if anyone could tell me for sure what these cables are for. I eventually plan to go aftermarket, but I want to get it to stock again before I begin anything major.
Thanks in advance, Rob

Forgot to add

I forgot to mention, the square one is grey, and the rectangular one is black with the wire colors on the plastic.

I think I can help a little bit. In the pic below, the grey cable with the small square plug on the end (#1) goes to the amplifier. The grey connector with wires (#2) is the "power" connector (hooks up the HU to battery/ignition/ground etc.);

RadioConnects.jpg

However, I'm not sure what the black connectors are for. The larger one (#3) looks like it was spliced in on my SHO so I'm not even sure if it is the original connector or not, and the small single wire w/black connector (#4) I don't know anything about either.

That is exactly what I needed, #1 , and #4 are the wires I was talking about, but my #4 is thin and flat instead of squared.
Thanks

#4 is for the redundant radio controls on the dash. I believe the other is standard wiring for cars w/o the premium system.

When I looked over the wiring diagram again for my '94 I noticed that there is a group of wires that connect to the speakers after the amplifier (i.e., by-passing the amp). However, on the JBL Premium Sound schematic these wires are labled "NOT USED". So it appears that they connect to the # 3 plug, making you correct on that. It's probably why these wires on my SHO had been spliced at one time, in order to accomodate an aftermarket deck and intentionally bypass the factory amp in doing so.

As a followup to this thread...

http://www.shoforum.com/showthread.php?t=38284

...yesterday afternoon I buttoned everything up (soldered in a standard Ford connector to the amp cable wires as recommended), and I also painted the radio trim flat black to better match the console trim. So, my SHO radio installation is now officially complete, and if I do say so myself, it looks and sounds quite professional. ;)

Personally, I don't think the JBL system sounds all that bad, I'm using the factory setup with a Kenwood KDC-MP225 I picked up dirt cheap recently ($99) at Best Buy. I might get tired of it at some point and want to upgrade, but for now I feel what I have going overall is a pretty darn good value. Plays all my discs/formats, gets good radio reception, looks and sounds good, easy to install (all things considered), and cost was minnimal.

Thanks for the feedback guys. :thumb:

I don't think the JBL system sounds that bad either. I'd like a little more low end bass but not at the expennse of the ears of my kids. I'm in the process of installing a Probe EQ (see Jelloslug's profile for pics). My initial testing with the EQ hooked up (but not properly installed) shows that it really augments the JBL system. The purist in me knows that the EQ adds "noise" as well. But hey, it's in a car that's none too quiet to begin with. The extra noise will never be noticed when the car is in motion. I have been looking around at aftermarket head units and the only ones I like (from an aesthetic perspective) are some of the high end Clarion units. The "hey look at me" look of the low end units simply look out of place in the SHO. Sort of like a big pimple on the end of your nose. I found the pop out volume controls on the Sony, Pioneer, Kenwood HUs felt like they were designed by a 2 year old. They were flimsy and gave me no confidence that they would last at the hands of my kids. And the units with removeable face plates creak every time a button is pressed. If nothing else the stock HU has a very high quality feel to it. I haven't physically touched the high end Clarion units yet but at least they look like they belong in the SHO. Just my $0,02

Thanks for your input. I believe you're right about the #4 wire, but I'm not so sure I can agree with what has been said about the #1 wire. I spoke the Dinosmash, who I bought the car from, and he told me the Head Unit that he put in before he sold the car to me, was from a ford ******, its just a factory AM/FM Ford HU, nothing special, the cheapest type available, but the connections on the back of the radio match up with the #2, and #3 wires. I have it connected and its working fine, I haven't been able to check it and see if the amps are running with these connections, but I believe they are. If the #1 wire is for use without the premium sound system to bypass the amps, why wouldn't the connector match up with the bottom end Head Unit that is currently being used in my car. If someone can give me a definite answer please do. I'm going to end up tearing into it in a couple of weeks once I'm settled in Florida, so if no one has an answer, or anyone else wants to know, I'll post my findings on here and let you all know. Sorry to you guys that posted, its not that I don't believe you, I think I'll just need to trace the wire for myself to be sure. I just don't think it makes sense for them to use a bypass wire with a connector that doesn't fit into the lowest end stereo that they released. If anyone else needs to know, just ask, and once I'm done I'll post it here.
Thanks again :thumb: , Rob

Rob what you said makes sense but backwards from what I was trying to say. 2 & 3 are for use w/o the premium and #1 is for use with the premium. I was just going on my experience with Ford radios. My 1990 ranger used plugs 2 & 3 and so did 3 other SLOs I've worked on. I also noticed that plug in my SHO, it was just buried and secured deeper within the dash. I would definatly like to know if you deceid to trace it further.

It's starting to get confusing now, so let me try and summarize:

#1 plug is used for hooking up the HU to the amplifier. The amp in turn drives the speakers and subwoofer

#2 plug is used for battery power/ignition/ground, which I asume all HU's need and use

#3 plug is used for bypassing the amplifier setup and hooking up the HU directly to the speakers

#4 plug is for the redundant radio controls on the dash

Sorry Rockledge, you're dead on :thumb: , its my dumb a$$ fault, and, Sorry Oh_SHO, I misinterpreted the posts, and mixed up the numbers and cables without realizing that what I was seeing, thinking, and saying were completely reversed. Between packing and all of the other things I've been trying to tie up in preparation for driving to Florida tomorrow night, my head has been almost literally spinning. I’m responsible for any confusion here, but Rockledge your last post is right on the money. I do have a few more things I’d like to ask of you guys though (trust me, I’m not always a total idiot, just sometimes when sleep deprived, and stressed out) Here are my last questions:
1.) Does anyone else have the #4 connector (Redundant dash remote controls) that is flat instead of squared, with the six wires inline, and each wires corresponding color marked on the black plastic connector, or has mine been replaced? I'll post a picture of it once I'm in FL, and have some time. Just drop me a line if yours is the same, I'd just like to know if mine's stock/normal or not.
2.) Does anyone have some pictures of the Factory JBL stereo, and any or all of its variations (Cassette, CD, AM/FM, all or whichever) in and/or out of the dash? As I said, the radio that I currently have in mine is a cheap standard Ford AM/FM one from an ******, and having now checked it out, it does not run my Amps or Sub. What I really want to do is, just bring it back to stock, until I can learn everything I need, and want to about this great new machine of mine, but the H/U will stay longest, I'd change amps, and speakers first. (every car I've ever owned, Mostly F-bodies (Trans AM's), I've always ended up rewiring the entire audio system upgrading wires/connections, and chances are good I'll continue the pattern with my new baby.)
3.) Do any of you know where I can get myself a good reasonably priced replacement factory H/U that will utilize the full capabilities of the JBL audio system (Amps, Sub, etc...), also I need the #1 wire, or atleast the connector, and a few inches of the wire. One of the Previous owners somehow managed to break the #1 connector at the elbow, so I don't want to rig it up and really wouldn't trust it to make a decent connection to run the Amps & speakers without completely replacing it. I checked at a local junk yard, and they tried to sell me the H/U and CD slave from a Mustang for $200.00. I nearly dropped a load in my boxers when he told me that price. For that amount of money I could have built the foundation of an extremely high end competition system, so if anyone could give me some cheap leads, I'd appreciate the help in getting my Minotaur back up to stock. Does anyone know which other model cars had a compatible JBL H/U and/or sound system that I might be able to cannibalize? Guys, and Gals, any of your help or suggestions will be truly appreciated, and if there's anything that I may be able to do for you I'll definitely try my best.

To OH_SHO: In response to your question, about tracing #1 wire, I haven't done it thoroughly yet, but off-hand I did notice that while digging into the trunk to inspect my amps, and speakers (if you have the Stock JBL setup) pull down the black cardboard amp cover (if its still there), look into the trunk to the right (of the black amp, located on the far right), There should be a wire very similar to the one in the dash, it should be running to the right side of that amp. Like I said, I haven't tested it, or physically traced it yet, but in my opinion, all logic points to that specific wire. There are others to the left, but to me, the one on the right looks a little bit more like that same one. When I have had the chance to do the physical work I'll definitely let you know for sure.

Sorry to run on so much guys, but I just wanted to cover as much as I could before I forgot. Thanks again for all of your input, Later,
Rob

Minotaur, reread my posts above, particularly #6, and you will find some answers to your questions.

As I said, I bought a Kenwood deck for under 100 bucks and installed it using the factory amp cable (#1) and the power/ground connector (#2). Right now my new aftermarket HU is utilizing the full potential of the stock premium sound system. With this setup, neither #3 or #4 on my SHO are hooked up to anything.

Also, the same plug (amp cable) that is broken on your SHO was broken on mine. So I cut off the plug end exposing the 8 wires inside the cable, and per Mark's suggestion I then soldered those 8 wires to one side of a standard Ford plug (looks exactly like plug #3 in the pic except it's gray). The other side of the same plug I connected to the speaker outputs on the HU. That is how I hooked up my Kenwood deck to the JBL premium system.

As for your description of what you think might be your redundant radio control wire #4, it doesn't sound to me like that is actually what it is. I think you might be talking about another connector that is associated with the Ford systems that came with a seperate CD player:

http://www.shoforum.com/showthread.php?t=38524

Personally, I looked around at boneyards etc. for a decent factory system and found nothing that I thought was worth putting in my SHO. It just all seemed like old, bulky technology, and price-wise there certainly were no bargains out there compared to what you can get today new on the aftermarket. Just my .02 on that, though.

Its just a personal preference

I know exactly what you mean about the tech, and affordability, but I was just hoping to find someone who has the JBL system, and has since upgraded to an aftermarket H/U, and wouldn't mind parting with their old stock one for a reasonable price. I did read and totally understand what you did, how it was done, and what you are saying, honestly that may end up being a second or third option if I don't get to restore the system as I'm trying to.

At this point I should probably just post a listing in the WTB section, for the H/U and #4 harness, or just hit a Salvage yard for the harness I need, but still ask for the radio. I only started this thread to have the connectors that I found identified, and thanks to your picture it has been done, except for the #4 cable, I'm not sure about it, because when I followed the wire It led up towards the remote, so until I can at least test a stock premium radio's connections, I can't be absolutely positive, because no one else has seen this wire (Until I post the pic).

You are right, I could simply just connect any H/U and get it to work with the system, but thats not what I'm going for. If I buy an aftermarket H/U, I would buy one that was worth it to me, I've been thinking of getting the Sony MEX-HD1, so to pay for a stock H/U to use until I'm able to get what I want, seems worthwhile to me. If I rewire a harness, and put in an aftermarket H/U I'd like it to be one that I REALLY WANT, so just buying a cheaper one ($85 - $300) to hold me over really just seems like a waste.

Thing is, I bought this car without any working audio, I've managed to get working sound, just not quite what I want, because I really need music while driving, (Especially now since tonight I'm about to start my drive for 17+hours straight through to FL.), so now I'll just be searching for a JBL H/U, and that #4 harness with a few inches of wire still connected.
Like I said before, I'm very well versed in the GM F-body cars, only because I've bought them in poor to fair shape, and then using salvage yards, and parts cars I returned them to their former, but better than stock condition, and then slowly, I would add the more costly aftermarket modifications and upgrades. I plan to do the same with my SHO.

Since this is my first SHO, I just feel more comfortable going about its restoration in a way that I'm most familiar with. I really don't even know for sure what parts on this car have been replaced with aftermarket parts, or even stock parts, that's why I tend to lean towards replacing missing/broken things with replacement stock items before going for aftermarket ones, unless the stock part I need is over priced, and difficult to install, then I'll look into going straight for the upgraded/aftermarket part. Yes, going with a majority of stock replacement parts will end up costing me more in the long-run, but when I'm done restoring it, or at least satisfied with the point I'm at, and I feel its ready to begin accepting the upgrades, I will know all of the work, and exactly when the upgrades were done, that they were done correctly, and by me. The over all confidence in the car and the work, not to mention the satisfaction I'll get out of it, will be well worth the little bit of extra money I end up spending. Even the time it takes to replace a part, and then to later do it again as an upgrade won't bother me, because of the learning experience (I expect to know this car inside and out before too long), of course there are exceptions, like major Engine/Trans work.

I'm the type of person who would rather be driving a car that looks beat up and bone stock, but runs great, rather than one that looks pristine, and runs like $#!+. Overall appearances, interior, and exterior are near the bottom of my list of things to do. I'm going to catch up on the mechanical maintainence, first, then suspension, and I'll move on to electrical system and stereo Its just my personal preference, I mean if I can't find a cheap enough stock radio, I will just trace all of the wires, use the ones I believe are good enough, run new higher gauge cables, put out the money to get the radio I want, and just fabricate an entire custom system using current positions, and brackets.

Like I said, I can see with your points, but I bought this car knowing it needed work, most of it is cosmetic, but I do need to make some minor adjustments, and do a little maintainence.

I'm just trying to explain my view, not that I'm disagreeing with you, I feel that this is the best way for ME to teach myself the ins and outs of this car. Everyone has their own way of doing things, and I like to learn from repetition. I don't want to spend money on an aftermarket radio I won't really like, so I just want to use the stock H/U with the right connections, (I had found a few H/U's locally for $20 - $50, but I was a few days too late) and save for the Sony MEX-HD1 MP3/CD/Memorystick H/U.

I'd still like to see some pics of the connections on the stock radio and slave themselves, so If anyone still has a stock JBL system, and wouldn't mind taking some pics of the back of the radios, please post here, or e-mail them to me at:
[email protected]

Sorry to ramble on, yet again, I'm just excited, and anticipating my drive, and I won't be back on here for a few days, so I don't want to exclude anything,
Thanks again, Later, Rob

Sounds like you have a plan. THE WTB section has helped me out a few times, so you should give it a shot.

Good luck with your "new" SHO. :)
