hey I have a 94 with the tape deck and speakers that say "premium sound" and the speaker amp in the back but no sub. Is this normal or did a previous owner take it?

the "premium sound" system is not the JBL system, so it will only have 4 speakers and the small amp in the back. It's no big deal, get yourself a new HU and some decent speakers and you should be pleased. The JBL sub is nice, but theres only so much you can do with 80watts and a 6 inch cone.

I had the same system in my old '93. No sub, and for some reason, I had one premium sound 6x8 in the back, and one lousy regular 6x8 on the other side. go figure. Just get some decent aftermarket 6x8s and especially some good 6.5" front speakers. I replaced the fronts in mine and it made a world of difference. The new HU will please you to no end with its newfound sound quality.

Ok, all SHO's I believe come with something that says "Premium sound" that means they have a better package than a normal Taurus. But JBL's all have 2 amps, now Gen 1's don't have a single sub. They have 2 subs that are 6x9's that sit directly underneath the 6x8's on the bottom part of the metal bracketing I believe. Lots of those 6x9 subs seem to be missing or dead though. Probably be easy enough to swap in a Gen 2 sub.

"premium sound" consists of 6 speakers, NOT 4.

2 in dash
2 in front doors
2 in rear deck

No sub though, But Id rather have it pre-wired to the dash and NOT have a sub. Those dash speakers do wonders.

Weird how the JBL system does not have dash speakers

A 94 with premium sound can't have 6 speakers there is no spot of dash speakers.

Aye. He's correct. However, from the top view on my '91 with JBL, I just see some blank dash plates. Doesn't look like any little tweeters are in there. Then again, I could be smoking crack.

The wiring in the dash is there on JBL systems (89-91). It's just not hooked to anything. The wiring in the first gen cars is very strange. If take the stereo out and look in the hole to the left you will see an extra set of plugs that look like the power connector for the stereo. They are actually the connections for the base (non amplified) stereo. One of them is the connection for the door/dash and package tray speakers. The way JBL/premium sound wiring works is the signal comes out of the head unit, goes back to the main amp and gets the sub channel split out, the main amplified signal (after it goes through the amp) now goes back up to the dash and connects to the speaker connection to the left of the head unit, then it goes out to the door and rear speakers. The 2nd gens don't have the loop back to the front after the amp.
