This only happens when the car is moving slowly, and its only 1st gear. Most of the time it goes in fine but sometime it grinds a bit. What could be causing this? Once in a while it can be difficult to get into 1st while stopped.

Usually a worn out clutch. When my clutch was nearing end of life, I was able to shift into first fine when cold, but it became more difficult as I drove the car. I pulled the tranny and my the fingers on my pressure plate was almost worn through by the throw out bearing.

Yessir!!!

What ever you do, don't buy the cheap way out and wait for the clutch to take a complete crap on you. If you do, you are wearing out the transmission internals that are no longer available and more expensive than a clutch if you can find them, creating a long life ahead for hard shifts. The best bet is to have the clutch assembly replaced as soon as possible!
