Is this seal supposed to be like this, and where does it go?

Is it supposed to have that break in it?

And do you push it all the way into the tranny housing or do you leave it further back on the intermediate shaft?

Is it supposed to be pushed in like this, or is it supposed to be in the grove on the intermediate shaft?

Mine had that slot in it too, so hopefully it's natural? But anyone have an answer to the location it should be in? Mine is out on the intermediate as well

That really isn't a seal, maybe for dirt but not for oil. The oil seal is in the trans housing. I think the groove in the shaft is where the oil seal contacts the shaft. So everything looks good to me. Just make sure everything turns freely.

mmm... there's another groove further out on the shaft, you can just barely see it in the pic. The more I look at it the more I think that's where it goes...

*edit* But then again, it fits in there so perfect...

That shield, or whatever you want to call it, is suppose to sit back some. Yours happens to be broken. After so long, as our cars are old, they tend to get real fragile and break easily. I broke mine on the 4 tranny drop when the axle swung back in and broke on the trans casing.

It's a combination of CV grease that was slinging all over the place, and oil leaking from my rear cam seal. It also looks like I may have a leak from either the rear main seal or the oil pan gasket.

Now let me get this straight, it is dust cover and DOES NOT get pushed into the tranny housing, but sits back further on the intermediate shaft, right? Can I get some confirmation on this?

Joshua, it's a dust shield and it should sit just in the spot where the shaft enters the transaxle to protect crap from getting blown up in there. I'll take a good pic of mine tomorrow for you so you can see. You're good to go bud. ;)

So is it supposed to look like this pic, or is it supposed to be sitting further out on the intermediate shaft?

I'll get a pic for you tomorrow. I'm in my pj's and have a towel on my head so I ain't gonna go out there now. Besides, it's raining and I might melt if I get wet between the front door and the carport. :D

Thanks Beth. :)

And that's fine, I wouldn't want you to melt... I know exactly what you're saying.

It is a slinger/shield that is not supposed to touch the output shaft (axle) seal. Yours in indeed cracked as it should be a continuous, solid piece. With the crack, you should be able to easily slide it on the shaft to provide the approximately 1/8" to 3/16" of space between the shield and the seal.

The lubricant all over the trans case appears to have leaked from that passenger side output shaft seal and has been doing it for a long time. The seal is a Timken 3622S and can be purchased from AutoZone for a very reasonable $2.99.

The difficult part is installing it without damaging it. I found a PVC pipe coupler that touched only the reinforced portion of the outer metal ring. It still took me several tries to install it without bending it even on the more accessible driver side seal. Since the seal has a metal frame and is pressed within a metal case, the fit is tight. I finally put the seal in the freezer to provide that tiny extra bit of clearance. This seal installation struggle is with the transaxle installed in the car. These seals are much easier to access and replace when the trans is out for a clutch service.

If you bolt the pillow bushing back to the car you wont have an option as to where the axle sits. it doesnt have enough play to move around.

See my topic on this service at the link below. The description on the coupling I used is in the #8 response to the topic.
