At highway speeds while cruising (OD), with the acc. pedal ever so slighlty engaged (to maintain a constant speed), the rpms will surge about 200-250 rpms for a second or two. I never noticed it until yesterday.
Other than that it seems fine. It shifts pretty smooth at WOT.

How often does it happen?
It's probably the torque converter engaging/disengaging. Congratulations! Now that you've noticed it you'll never be able to ignore it again. :D

Same thing happens in my car.
That’s what I blame the gas mileage on! :D :p

Mine did this too, so I shot a little contact cleaner on the MAF wire. No more lock-unlock. I suspected it was the oil from my K&N filter, and it seems my hunch was right. Hope this helps you out. Give it a try. It's a free fix anyway. And free is ALWAYS good! thumb

David, turn your compressor off by useing the vent only. When ever the compressor works, Heat, AC, defrost it will cycle and unlock the convertor, Its very common.

FWIW, this happens to us Gen 2 ATX'ers as well. It's an unfortunate side-effect of the awesome (ha!) programming that Ford provided us from the factory. OTOH, I'm sure a chip from Alberto would fix you right up. wink

Alberto from americanmotorsport.com is the man in question. You can read his original Gen 3 post here.

IINM, he is selling his "standard" N/A chip for about $325. Contact him for exact pricing.

FWIW, Gen 3 member Tunez is supposed to be getting a custom chip from Alberto made here soon and will then have it dynoed soon after. You might want to contact him if you have any further Gen 3-specific questions or concerns regarding Alberto's chips.

I think this would be a very good check before spending any money. Historically, chips have tended to be of very little value for the Gen III, and sometimes they have reportedly caused outright harm. When asked about specifics, Alberto tended the conversations quickly back to generalities, which for me did not inspire confidence. With this long history of low return for money spend on Gen III chips, caution is perhaps adviseable.
