Is there an easy way to remove a MTX in a junkyard car?

There is a JY MTX I want to nab, but there is only so much I am allowed to bring into the JY. Can I take a MTX out while leaving the engine in the vehicle?

How much room are you going to have under there? The DIY places around here have the welded steel wheels holding up the cars. You might have to drop the subframe while supporting the engine on top to get it out. Some places have a few hoists for customers but I think yes you can, but maybe really hard doing it there yourself without a bunch of stuff. Do they offer a service that they will pull it?

Not sure, I'll check. One of the places does have a hoist (pick-n-pull) chain. I'll have to see if this one fits. They put them up on the welded rims here as well.

something from Nick, I have heard or read somewhere you can drop the rear of the subframe to slip the tranny out, but depends where the welded rims gets placed. I know Brad use to pull trannys from cars all the time, he had like 4 or 5 sitting in his garage

Yeah. I spent alot of time at a local pick-n-pull chain here. they list hoists but I have no idea how many they have available. I just don't know how much room there is to work under there. I pulled all my parts from the top or in the cabin. Might need cheater pipe or something if you are doing it by hand. No telling if subframe and other bolts will cooperate or not. Does the exhaust have to come off? I forget.

That removal with the dropped subframe and lifting the front up is exactly how I would do it. Salvage yard might not get all that stuff inside. I really wonder if, for a fee, they will pull powertrain parts

Loosen the passenger side subframe bolts and remove the driver side bolts. That allows the subframe to drop with enough room to get the trans out. The only problem is you will need a jack to support the engine while you remove the trans and from what I understand most places don't allow jacks into the yard.

Just tell them you want an engine or trans. They'll come over with a skip loader and lift it out. That means an engine comes out the top without subframe, and you've got to make sure everything clears and is unhooked and unbolted. That is, if they don't make you use one of the dumb hoists like this picture: https://www.picknpull.com/about/safety

Doesn't seem like an "emergency"...

I had an '89 that was my pride and joy, in San Diego. Short story: 1992- it was stolen, taken to Tijuana and used by the police chief for about a year, until he burned out the clutch. An insurance investigator found it in the local junkyard and called me. Thanks to my wife who can be a real bear, we got it out of the junkyard with anew battery. The clutch was barely able to hold in a lower gear, but made it slowly back home.
First thing I did was pull the tranny and change the clutch, in my driveway, on my back. If you look in the archives you may be able to find aengine support that fit in the hood crease, piece of cake to fab. After that it wasn't a problem to drop the tranny, its been 30 years so a little foggy on the details. I do recall taking the subframe out and replacing bushings while I was at it. But basically a 5 on the difficulty scale.
Good luck.

Interior smelled like all sorts of drugs, the top and hood had footprint dents, paint was scuffed. Engine still good, I drove it a few more years before selling. I then bought a '95 ATX. No comparison, I hated it. Sold it within a year.

It really just depends on how "right" you want to do it. The last one I pulled in a yard, I unbolted or removed everything and dropped the subframe last. So, starter, shifter, clutch cable, speedo cable, etc. I usually just pop the lower ball joints out of the knuckle and leave the axles in the hubs. Remove the steering rack nuts, motor mount nuts, trans mount bolts, all but one accessible bellhousing bolt (and even crack that loose) and at the very end, drop the subframe and let the whole drivetrain fall. The wiring harness and such will hold it up enough, move the subframe out of the way, then just pull the trans off.

It's not the prettiest way, but the yards here just rip the drivetrains out and put them in a recycling container before crushing the shell anyway. If you want to try to save anything SHO engine specific you might need, do that before pulling the trans.
