Hello to all,

I have a green 93 ATX. She has a new CAM sensor, new crank sensor, idle motor, cooling computer (can't remember the real name for this one, sorry.) All within the last couple months. The car was giving my mechanic several codes, all of which have gone away now that these sensors have been replaced.

The check engine light never comes on (unless it stalls, and all the lights come on).

The car will stall going down the road, accelerating, coasting, and for no apparent reason. It will stall when it's warm, and stall when it's cold. It is totally unpredictable.

As a last resort, we swapped out the main computer. (I have two identical SHO's) All with the same result. The idle will be a tiny bit flighty occasionally....with a little loss of power in the lower RPM's range.

It will run beautifully for a week or so. When it stalls, it will be very hard to keep it running for a mile or two. (so much so, that last time I barely made it home)

I would appreciate any assistance that you all can give. With no further codes to check, my mechanic and I are both at a loss.
Thanks.
Christine

Check your fuel pressure in both your rail and your lines. It could possibly be a fuel pump problem. Have you tried cleaning the injectors first? Can you hear them ticking softly and rapidly? Does the car ever backfire or miss? Knocking? Loss in power? MAF loose or dirty? Hows the ignition? Plugs? are the wires bare, crossed or old? Does it choke to a stop or just suddenly cut out? Run codes, despite not having a CE light on.

Post some more info so we can help.

And what is a cooling computer?!?

Howdy boys. :)

Ok, I thought maybe the fuel pump...but this has been going on for 4 months, would the fuel pump take that long to die????

The cooling computer? Did I type that? Sorry. I meant the computer the controls the temp of the car....the car never seemed to get nice and warm in the winter; like it did before. This obviously wasn't related to the stalling.

The car basically dies with no warning. It doesn't choke, run really rough or give me much warning. I will be crusing along at 85 and it just quits running. (I lose power steering and braking, so this is a pretty dangerous situation.) I have a 25 mile commute to work each way, so I REALLY need this car to run!

I love the car, it is in good shape with only 110k miles on it...so it's worth fixing. There are no codes to check. I would definitely post them if I had them. My mechanic is at a total loss, he's had the car on and off for the last 4 months...I don't think he wants to work on it anymore, and I can't blame him.

Help!
Christine

You say that when it stalls it's very hard to keep it running, what do you have to do to keep it running?? Do you need to give the car gas constantly to keep it from dieing? Does the car buck when trying to give it gas when it's running rough like this?

Also you should update your location. There might be a local SHO owner who knows more about the car then your local mechanic.

I've heard of the waterpump leaking on the CPS causing intermittent stalling. Go to show times, and under care and feeding of the shows, there's a topic on your problem...
Try this

Well, when the car wants to die, it just dies...there is nothing I can do (i.e. giving more gas) to keep it running. It took about 45 minutes to go a mile the other day, because it would stall and I couldn't get it to stay running for more than 15 seconds. Then, suddenly it was fine.

It has a new water pump. (October 2003) So I don't think it's leaking on the CPU. (Also, the CPU that you are refering to is up behind the glove box, correct???)

:( I love the car. Please help.

Thanks.

Fuel pumps can take a LONG time to die. Most of the time they gradually fail and end up causing problems just like yours.

At the DEALERSHIP!!!

Howdy Boys! ;)
My sweet SHO is currently at the Ford Dealership and they don't have a clue why it's stalling either. They said "crank sensor" at first, and now they backed off of that diagnosis since the sensor is only about 45 days old.
Well, they have had the car since last Friday (this is now Thursday!), and they still can't get it resolved.

So, anyways. Just wanted you to know that the problem still exists, and that I still have no idea when it's going to be fixed. I guess everyone is dumbfounded by this one.

If anyone thinks of any new ideas, please post them. Thanks.

Like I said... CPS. The water pump probably had an improperly installed seal, or a burnt seal that's allowing hot coolant to leak on the CPS (crankshaft position sensor). They may have been right, but who knows.
