Okay so I havea 95 MTX that has the tan 50/50 cloth and leather interior. I happen to think that the pattern on the cloth portion of the seats is extremely ugly though, so I'd like to swap the seats for the full tan leather ones. Here are my questions about this, and keep in mind I'm not much of a car guy. I recently completed my first car repair ever on an SHO which was just replacing the rear brake calipers, pads, and rotors, so thats about the extent of how handy I am!

1. Do you have to replace the entire seats, or is there a way to just replace the cushions on the seats and keep the frames of the seats intact?

2. Which way is easier if you can do both, and how hard of a job is this to swap seats. Keep in mind I'd like to swap all the seats entirely so they match.

I appreciate the responses on this one. Thank you!

easy thing

actually very easy to do.there is four bolts for the front seats,if i remeber correctly they are 13 mm,slide the front seat all the way forwards n loosen the 2 inside of the tracks ,then slide the seat back n take out the front 2 on the end of the tracks.also unplug all wiring underneath the seats, the rear is even easier,on the lower press in sharply with your knee to unlatch the keeper off the hook that is located in the middle of each side, should pull out without a fight if it is unlatched, the upright seat is held in with a 10mm bolt on the lower corners n a hook latch on each upper corner, once again should just come out with ease,if not push up a little more to make sure they are off the hook.this usually takes me 30 mins taking my time as i,m in no rush ,but have had a set out in less than 15 good luck n have fun

You can do both.

Swapping covers would be the ideal option if you cannot find seats local (since shipping covers is MUCH cheaper than trying to ship an entire seat), or if you plan to buy an interior kit. This takes longer, and will require hogring pliers. It also requires more mechanical savvy, since you need to partially disassemble the front seats to get the covers off.

If you find a donor vehicle local, it would be a lot easier to swap entire seats, instead of seat covers. Especially if your experience is at a minimum. Swapping seats is really not that hard, couple of bolts and plugs to undo.

If you have any trouble there are quite a few of us that have had the seats out and apart a time or two and can push you in the right direction.

Its easy to do, 4 bolts as mentioned. 13mm and either a 17 or 18mm. One block for each seat. pull the back seat first, unbolt the fronts, and pull them out the back doors. I actually just did this to shampoo my carpets and put my interior trim back in. took me maybe 10 to pull both front seats, but the back seat wasnt in and ive done it before. It's very simple.

If you can do rear calipers, you can do either the seat replacement or the cover replacement. The cover replacement will be slightly harder than the rear brakes, in my experience, and replacing the entire seats will be significantly less difficult. As was mentioned, the hog ring pliers is pretty much a required tool to do the cover swap.

anyone got an idea how to remove the seats if the power rack wont move? both my front seats recently stopped working as far as moving back and forth goes. is there a way to manually shift the seats to get at the bolts? luckily for me and my tall friends that ride shotgun both seats are all the way back. unfortunately i cant reach the back ones with the seats in the position they're in.

i think by the end of the month i'll have some seats to replace these ones. both the seats have broken trim on the sides (P.O. had sheepskin seat covers and they clipped em to the plastic and every time they got in they'd slide the cover over and pull on the plastic enough to break the bezel in 3 places.)

if the seats still moved back/forth and the bezels weren't busted i'd bother with recovering the driver's seat (leather cracked in the lumbar area) but at this point it's probably easier just to yank em. i wanna do the gen 2 console swap anyway so i'd like to remove at least the driver seat

In my old '95 the drivers seat did the same thing. I would only move back, but not forward. I discovered if I got in the back seat and pushed like ****, while working the switch I could get it to slowly move.

you must be more bendy than I am. may have to recruit the wife for the switch working when i get home. i already got the back seats out, i definitely wanna take the passenger seat out, and once i get the replacements i'll yank the drivers spot.

I had removed the engine and subsequent ability for power to go to the seats. I even tried power to just the harness for the seat, but it didnt work too well) but the rear inside bolt is very difficult to get at. I had to crawl underneath the vehicle with a grinder and cut the bolts off that way. I of course wasn't concerned about the bolts, I just wanted the seats out. This might be an option for you, because you can always buy new bolts. But once the seats are out be sure to get the track moved all the way back to re-install the seats.
Good luck.

I've gotten them out without any ability to move the seats fore/aft before - its just slow because you need an open end wrench and lots of 'bites' on the nuts to get them off....
