Well, I have generated a medium pitched whine, that is sporadic under initial throttle from a stop. It sort of rattles on and off for a bit after going into second and then goes away. Only happens under load, and does not vary if the engine is warm or cold.

Any ideas? The dealership has easter-egged it twice, first replacing the 3 idler pulleys, and then the main bearing in the alternator, all on their nickle, to no result. I would like to point them in the right direction, but aside from saying that it might be transmission or power steering, what else can I tell them? Anyone have any ideas?

Take the belt off and see if it goes away. If it did then it's the PS.

Cannot feel any vibration, Mark, though at the top is sort of cuts in and out in a way that you would think there would be one.

Hmm, I am not sure if it does it with the belt off or not, Paul. I will have to ask or try it. The mechanic that was doing the work did take off the serpentine belt when trying to isolate the problem, and then decided it was the rollers, so it must have stopped with the belt off. I have to go out of town for a few days, but will check back with them about that on Monday. Thanks.

Any other thoughts are, or course, welcome.

Stephen: You know your stuff pretty well, but does it only do this under hard throttle in first and maybe second gear? I doubt that you would have missed it but it really sounds like the EGR hitting the FSTB. I hate these motor mounts (WAY too much give).. Nimz has the right idea...

If you suspect the PS pump then while the engine is idling and with the belt on place along screwdriver on the pump body. If it is it that is making the noise it will be very appparent.

Use the sharp end of the screwdriver on the pump......

Hi guys,

Actually, it is much simpler to hear it under light throttle, and I did check initially for touches on the FSTB, but I will look again. To check the PS pump with my resonator, I need two people, and have just not managed to get a second person available, but I will try it when Scott gets back later today.

Thanks,

Well, I got a chance today to do a bit of listening with Jeannie on the throttle and brakes. I think it is the power steering pump. I get a very loud response directly the same in my stethascope ear as in my open ear. So later in the day I went into town and went out back at the dealership to talk to my favorite mechanic and he said he also thought it was the power steering pump, but was having trouble convincing management. So I went and talked to the shop manager, who is a nice guy but was never a mechanic and really knows nothing about repairing cars but what he is told, and I find out they wanted to wait to order it until into next month for some accounting reason, so a new power steering pump will be on its way shortly.

So I guess we will see when it gets here.
