intake manifold runner control

When the secondaries on a V8 SHO get all gummed up, does the intake manifold runner control quit working? Will it quit opening the secondaries?

I don't know how the V8's work, but the V6 SHO's runner butterflies use a vacuum line to control a solenoid for each bank. If there is vacuum in the line, the valves are closed and when they are at normal pressure (no vacuum) they are wide open. So if a vacuum line goes out, they will just stay open. If they get gummed up, they may have trouble opening, but they are all connceted to one shaft for each bank and the spring (at least for V6's) is very strong. Even if they were stuck shut, it SHOULD only hinder performance and not do any damage to the motor, but don't hold me for that.

I found this out on my '95 because one of the vacuum lines to my intake had been rubbing on something and developed a hole in it, therefore not providing any vacuum. My car had trouble starting and it was because when the line wore out, the runners were open all of the time and the engine would get dumped with too much air on start up.

It is also fairly easy to clean them out, it's just getting to them is hard and you will probably have to replace the gaskets.

V8's are electrically controlled. And if they get gummed up the controller can break. Either the cable end or the plastic wheel inside are usually the culprit. Regular cleaning is the best way to prevent it.

By getting rid of them, you do mean wire or zip tie them open right? What sort of tunning should be applied for wide open secondaries?

However, short of hauling them out completely, wiring them in the open position saves a lot of hassles and seems to have no negative effects except in slightly rougher starting in very cold weather. No real retuning is required, though with some of the modern chips a bit of touch of cannot hurt either.

With the elimination of the secondary shafts you will remove ~3 sq" of obstruction from the intake path. Some tuning will increase the power down low if you like plus fix the cold weather annoyances.

I zip-tied mine open a few months ago and the car seems to perform well, plus it has that lovely deep sound again of course. Here in Alabama, it doesn't get too cold, so I really haven't noticed any rough running at first start up in the mornings, the FUNSHO is garage kept as well so I guess that helps too. Anyway, thought I would just ask about the tune thing. Thanks.:thumb:
