I recently disassembled my intake to clean it. And i saw that after you take off the butterflies there's tubes inside the tanks. I was wondering if I discard them will it perform better or sound better? Or if i pierce them will it make a supercharger whine after 4k? Please help.

The are there to tune the length of the short runners, you may get a little bit of top end, (may) at the cost of a loss of low end TQ.

What Marcel said. You have to keep in mind that there is a certain theory behind a "tuned" intake.

I'd have to think that Yamaha knew what they were doing when they designed the SHO's upper intake. It certainly looks like they spent a lot of time on it (somebody recently posted links to some of the patents - interesting stuff). So IMO it's probably a better idea not to fiddle with the horns.

I believe the general concensus here is to leave the "horns" in your intake, unless you have BBB's or EX runners.

When I removed the intake horns, my butt dyno sensed a slight loss in torque right around 4k RPM (when the secondaries snap open), but the sweet intake sound that resulted was worth it, IMO.

FYI the intake horns he is refering to are on the secondaries (short runners) so there will be 0 loss at low rpm's so the only effect is at 4K+
