I took the front end of the intake manifold off today and was suprised to find that the hose has a pretty dramatic restriction in it. Does anyone know why this is and has anyone replace those hoses with standard, non-restricted hoses and what was the effect?

I think the part of the hose you're talking about was put there to keep the intake from banging against it's self.Think of it as a buffer or spacer between the intake.
Do take care of those hoses becuase they can not be found anymore ( new that is).
I learned this when replacing my worn out hoses, had to go with radiator hose from NAPA.There is a group buy onsome nice silicone hoses if youre interested.

Not a whole lot of air is moving through that part of the intake. That is more of a balance tube to help the motor's airflow upstream.
