This post is based on Scot Hewitt's post about the gasket set. I'm wondering if you people would suggest I pick up the 2 gaskets. I'm currently at almost 118k, so do you thnk they'd probably break when removed? Thanks for any advice!

Intake runner to head gaskets are metal, and the only problem with those is that the paint flakes off. Intake manifold gaskets (between the butterflies & plenum) are a fiber, and IMO should be changed whenever the intake is separated.

I have yet to see any gaskets on the intake really reuseable after 60k.

Do you happen to know where I can pick up those gaskets (the fiber ones), if they can be resealed with RTV, and if there is a good way to clean/remove the intake without damaging them?

All in all, I guess this is the question:

What gaskets should I buy and replace if I'm cleaning the intake when doing the valve lash (I already know about the valve cover gasket set w/ plug seals).

I know it is frowned apon, but I reused all my old gaskets. Put a little bit of rtv on selected places (plug well seals etc..). My car doesn't leak so I'm happy thumbs_u

Don't use RTV on the fiber gaskets for the intake, just get the new set. It's $46 for the set at A-Zone.

Fel-Pro P/N MS94831

Comes with metal gaskets & the fiber ones for the intake. Does NOT come with a new TB gasket.

Is it necessary to get the TB gasket? I don't even know if it really needs removal, as it has been cleaned previously. And thanks for the P/N and stuff! :D

Just a thought, it is easy, and effective, enough to clean the intake with it all assembled, and avoid getting the intake plenum gaskets? Apparently that's what the SHOtimes article writer did, just dump the stuff in the intake ports, and slosh it around. And how about this Gumout stuff that people say they can use only 2 cans to clean the intake with? Thanks again! thumbs_u

The TB gasket can be reused. You shouldn't have to remove the TB for much except a complete disassembly. That isn't necessary unless you are going to have the intake powder coated.

Spray hi temp engine paint on both sides of the metal gaskets before re-installing them.

There is supposed to be a gasket between the TB and the Intake? D'oh.

Since I'm a newbie to this car, I need some accounting here. There are the metal gaskets that seperate the "removeable" intake from the rest of the engine, there are gaskets between the runners and the butterflies, there are head gaskets that I have no idea where they go, and the valve cover gaskets. Add on to that list the gasket between the TB and the intake? Any other obvious gaskets I'm missing?

(Still trying to get my car started for the first time, BTW)

There are gaskets between any metal to metal interface where there needs to be an airtight or liquidtight seal.

Is this enough? Or is a silicone type material recommended?

The intake to head gaskets have a raised ring stamped around the ports. If the coating has not chipped off this area of the steel gasket-it will seal fine.
