When reusing the head bolts, should I use sealant on the bolt threads? It looks as if the threads on the block go into the water jacket.

Anything you use on the threads will affect your torque readings. Do not do it on critical components.

rk,

Listen to SHOZ123. The head bolts should be clean and lightly oiled for a proper torque reading. If the shop manual for your model year tells you that a specific head bolt needs a sealant, that would be the only time I would apply any thing other than a light coat of oil to a head bolt (period).

Before you reuse head bolts, check them for stretch by holding a straight edge against the threads. If ALL the threads touch the straight edge, the bolt is OK.

If ALL the threads do not touch the straight edge, replace the bolt. Having said that, I personally would not recommend reusing head bolts. But if you do, at least check them for stretch.

Lastly, torque the bolts in the proper sequence as specified by the shop manual. I have one more quirk about head bolt that you can take or leave.

I like to bring the engine up to temperature for at least a half an hour after it is fully assembled. Then I let it cool down, and then re-torque the head bolts. This is a pain in the but with the SHO, but worth the effort, IMHO, Hope this helps, rangerj

FWIW, I think Fel-Pro has a replacement head bolt set that's not too much money. It may be worth replacing them to be on the safe side.

Can anyone tell me what the difference is between the 3.0L head gasket and the 3.2L gasket? I tried the search and couldn't come up with anything. The only thing I can find different is the bore size.

Shawn,

Felpro Pt #9821 PT is the head gasket for both the 3.2 and the 3.0. At least that is the way they are listed in the parts catalogue at Autozone.

They would have to be the same since, both heads ar exactly the same except for some minot external differences for the alternator mounts.

I am using 3.0 heads on my 3.2 ATX engine.

By the way I picked them up for $52.00 ea.

Um, NO the head gaskets are different - the CYLINDER BORE is larger on the 3.2... wink

Take a stock Ford HG for each, put them on top of each other, and you'll be able to see this.

The HG Bolts are the same, and yes, I've re-used them on my own engines - Mark N. turned me onto that. I was informed at one time that they were torque-to-yield bolts, and would stretch on torqueing, but have also been told that it's only the V8's (with the aluminum block) that are TTY bolts. The installation instructions on torqueing the 2 bolts are different, which lends some weight to Mark's side of the argument.

Customers' cars I bought new bolts, just to be safe. They're $90 per head's worth of bolts, (or were last year) FYI.

BTW, For those who haven't figured it out, you need 3.2L HG for the 3.2L block, regardless of the head you use.

You are right Yamamha, the head gaskets are different. I called a Ford dealer and he confirmed it. However he wants $280.00 for the pair of gaskets. I have been trying to find a better price but no one seems to carry them.

Any suggestions where I could buy them for a resonable price?

Josh at SHO Nut carries a complete upper gasket set which includes 3.2L head gaskets for $143.73.

So, is there any reason other than bore size that would not allow one to use the 3.2L HG on a 3.0L engine? I've seen lots of engines where the fire ring on the HG is quite far from the cylinder wall. The only reason I ask is that I have 2 sets of HG for 3.2L engine. As far as the head bolts, I haven't seen anything in the Ford service manual to suggest replacing the bolts when removing. For the 3.8L engine the manual clearly states to discard the bolts when removed. I used to own a 1989 Shelby Daytona that had TTY bolts, but the manual stated to torque the bolts and if the final result was less than spec. (I can't remember what it was right now) to then replace them. I'm thinking the SHO may be similar.

BTW, Merry Christmas :D

The 3.2 IS for a 3.2 bore. The 3.0 fits the 3.0 bore. if you use the smaller gasket on the 3.2 bore you will expose & overheat the fire ring & burn/blowout the gasket. There is no difference in gaskets but the bore size.

I realize that you can't use 3.0L gaskets on the 3.2L but what about going the other way???

smacd,

No you can't interchange the head gaskets from 3.2 to 3.0 or vis versa!!!! The gasket must be the same bore to seal the cylinder with the fire ring. I purchased a 3.2 gskt kit for a 60k service and later resold the head gaskets to a forum member, you may get lucky to find another 3.0 owner that will do the same.

...As noted in a earlier post the 3.0 upper gasket kit sells for over $200 were the 3.2 kit can be had for under $150 which can also be used for the 3.0 except for the head gaskets.

Sorry to bring an old thread back but I just wanted clear things up and make sure I am installing the heads correctly.

Anything you use on the threads will affect your torque readings. Do not do it on critical components.

Does this imply that none of the head bolts require any sealant?

I love Zombie threads. I look at the names and I'm like, who the heck are these people?

Anyway, has anyone actually confirmed that the stockers are torque to yield or are they reusable? I replaced mine just for the **** of it but I did keep the stock bolts.
