I was on my way home tonight, on a nice straight stretch of a 3 lane highway. Speed limit is 70 and I'm cruisin right at 70. I had one of those gut feelings that a cop was about even though I hadn't seen one yet.

I look in my rear view mirror and I see two cars zipping in and out of traffic like crazy so I pull into the furthest right lane (the SLO lane) and continue cruising along. They get up and one passes me in the center lane and the other guy is in the furthest left lane. Well there's a car going slower there so he zipped over from the furthest left lane, across the center lane and into my lane, almost bashing me in the side. I take the emergency lane to avoid him smashing me. It's full of gravel and dirt so I let off the gas immediately so I didn't start to slide or spin. (No brakes at first...just let off the gas). Well shit if there wasn't a huge hole coming up real quick....put the brakes on but I didn't feel like I could stop without spinning out in the gravel. The hole was almost the entire emergency lane BTW and probably 2 feet wide and about 1/4' deep. Doesn't sound huge...unless you're going pretty fast when you hit it. It all happened so fast I guess I should be thankful that nothing worse happened. But it gets more maddening.

I get back on the highway, I'm not sure how cause my feet were shaking and I could barely shift. Nerves I spose. Anyhow, I get going down the highway, going about 65 now cause I was pretty shaken and about 1 1/2 miles up from where I was run of I see a cop has one of the cars pulled over. The cop must have been just on the other side of the bridge/hill. I recognized the car in an instant. (GTP or whatever those POS's are called) So I pull over off the road, thinking I'm gonna get this a-hole in worse trouble than he was already in. I walk up to the cop, who seemed rather surprised and un-nerved that I was walking up to them. (I don't blame him...he didn't know who I was or what had happened). Anyhow, he comes over to me and I tell him what had happened. He said there wasn't a damn thing he could do because a) he didn't see it and b) I didn't get the plate number off the car. I'm like, no shit...I was run off the road! How was I supposed to get his friggin plate number? I had to think more about preserving my life and that of my car...I wasn't too concerned about getting his friggin plate number at the time. But I recognized the car!!! The punk kid (no offense guys) was just sitting in there with his buddy with a big smerk on his face! He knew what he'd done!

Anyhow, what I need opinions on are this. I now have (at slow speeds) a major wag in my ass end. I'm thinking rim because it feels like more the right rear than the other side. I also have a low sounding rubbing or thunking noise in what seems to be my right rear tire. The wagging and noise seem to go away as I go faster. Does this sound like a rim for the waggin? What about the other rubbing/thunking sound? Rotor??

I also have a vibration from the front end at higher speeds. Starts around 68 mph and goes away at about 73 or 74, then starts back up at about 80. That's the highest I got afterward, I was afraid to go any faster. It's almost rhythmic...vibrates for a few seconds, then stops, then vibrates for a few seconds and so on. In other words, it's not a constant vibration. When it vibrates the wheel shakes (not terribly) as does everything else up front. I know front end alignment is in order, but anything else I should keep my eyes open for?

Sorry for the very long post guys and gals, but I had to vent and get some opinions. I tell ya what, you always need to be observant and be defensive while driving. Had I not been paying full attention to what was behind me as well as in front I (and my baby) would probably be toast right now.

Whoa, shit. That REALLY sucks. Im sorry. I know exactly what thats like, except I'm the one pulled over......J/K!!

Inregards to the the "vibration" on the front end, that might be alingment. I had that same problem around those speeds, got a tire rotation and a alingment and it all went away.

Beth .. its good to hear your ok !!!

If you can. Have the rear tires balanced again. I had the same trouble with mine. Only to find a flat spot and broken belts inside the tire's rubber. It use to make the back of the car seem to have a bent rim. If there are broken belts in the tire ... it has to be replaced. Hope this helps.

BTW .. I sent you mail.

Yup, I got your mail. Come Friday I'm putting my big shopping list together for ya. I'm glad I'm ok too, but I'm worried about my baby. She's going in the shop maybe this weekend if my mechanic can squeeze her in. BTW, I think I did break a belt in the tire or broke the seal, I just went outside and that rear passenger tire is flat as a pancake. I just got that one patched yesterday from the screw I picked up over the weekend! Good thing they are under warranty. Ba-humbug...this day sucked!

That's total BS Beth, sorry you were involved in that. I take no offense to the punk kid statement. I'm not a punk kid, nor do I drive like one, so I got no prob with that. As far as your suspension issues go, I'd check to see if you bent a control arm, tie rod, and check for damaged CV boots. I don't think it sounds like a rim, because a bent rim would wobble at all speeds, and they typically get worse as speed increases. Sounds like you bent a thing or two in the rear though. Don't worry, it will all turn out ok. I wish I could tell you something to do, but the best advice I have is to keep your eyes peeled for him on the freeway or around town and maybe get his plates. If he was young enough you could always get his addy from the DMV and talk to his parents. Not that it will do any good these days, but it might be worth a try, you know?

Thanks Scott. Do you have any input on what I should look for or have checked out? Thanks!

That really sucks. It's cool though that you actually went up and told the cop. I probably wouldn't have done that. That's awesome! You can be my new hero.

that sounds a little like myself. It takes an extreme amount of BS to make me mad and get me on my nerves, as a matter of fact, not many people have ever seen that side of me. But what happened to you would have set me off too. when i get mad I tend to be a smartass too. If the cop told me that there was nothing he can do b/c i didn't get the plate number, I would have gone back to my car and took out my notepad and a pen, wrote down the plate, told the cop I got it now and ask him is there anything he can do. (i suppose you could call this stupidity) It's not against the law but odds are he'd tell you to scram. I would then just go home and call the plate in to the barricks responsible for that jurisdiction. They'll ask if you want to press charges and i would have. That was uncalled for!! I'm glad you're ok and like Scott said, your car can be fixed or replaced but life cannot.
As for the car, I'd get that tire taken care. They should balance them there. And if there is still a problem, i'd get an alignment
once agian, i'm sorry for what happened and i wish you the best of luck!

for the record, a vibration is never cause by alignments. It is either caused by a) a flatspot or dent in the rim, b) a bad tire (a hop) or cupping, or c) tires are out of balance. I'd take the car to whoever you have do the tires, have them pull the wheels off the car, do a full suspension inspection, and also spin each of the wheels/tires on the balancing machine to see if any were dented. If so, find out how much it would be to repair all said costs and forward it so the state of Michigan. They have insurance for road hazards and the destruction they cause on cars.

Don't know if this will help, I had a problem with front end clunks a while back. First thing my tech checked was for gravel in the front spring pockets. Found a bunch. cleaned it and now, no more clunks.

Thanks for the info. Anything is possible and food for thought. I'll have my guy check it out when the car goes in the shop.

BTW all, I may be on the market for a new slicer. Mine's got a pretty good bend in it from the pothole that I hit.

Also, I checked into the state paying for the damage from the pothole and I was told that they wouldn't pay for it because it was in the emergency stop lane and they have to get 3 or more complaints on it in order for it to be considered a hazzard and/or state responsibility. I did drive past there today and noticed that it has been patched though.

Hi Beth,
I, too, am glad you are OK. Teach this punk a lesson in civics and justice - sue him in small claims court. You can get his name, etc from the ticket the cop gave him (call them) or from DMV if you explain you are sueing the punk for damages. Since he got a ticket, get the info from that file, use it in court, which is enough evidence in civil court that he caused you damages. Bring the estimate or receipt for the damage. He will lose, you will win, and when his pocket book hurts, he will remember his actions cost money and hassles. its worked for me!! Like they say on TV, "dont get mad, sue the bastard!"
cheers, Dave Ladely
