ok so i have a sho that at first wouldnt stay running but now it wont start so i need some troubleshooting help. it started on mon. morn. i drove about 3 minutes and the car died, it took a long time to start back up then drove about 40 seconds died again same thing then drove about 20 sec. died then it would crank for awhile and start up run good for about 20 sec. and die, it idi this about 10 times and then i just towed it to my shop and now it would crank for a long time and finally start up but the same thing just die and as i was donig this it seemed to be starting up farther and farther apart then i got an insanely loud backfire out the exaust but a frw seconds later the car started and died again. and now the starter is burned out from all the cranking so i swapped out for a spare and now it just cranks not even trying to start and cranking alot faster almost too fast. so i check for spark-good check for fuel-fuel pump hums and stops like it should and the pressure guage reads normal so fuel is good. swapped out dis for a spare nothing swapped out maf for a spare nothing, so im tinnking cam sensor or the dreaded crank sensor! so i hope this is enough info to some good ideas from you guys. any more needed just ask. thanks for the help.

oh yea the car is a 93 mtx 3.2 swap and i had a super chip in but was kinda loose so when i hit a big bump the car would die pretty much like it did on mon. morn. so i took the chip out thinking that might be it, but didnt change anything and i also just recharged my k&n filter thats why i swapped out the maf for a spare too. man i need this car running so any info would be great thanks guys

If you hit a bump, YES, look at the chip. I had to black / duct tape mine in place on the blower car.

But if you've tried running without the chip & it's the same, yeah, try the engine sensors.

You didn't mention any other mods - MAF, larger injectors, anything like that, or stock w/ chip?

3.2 swap, 3.0 heads and intake, 73mm c&l maf, super chip, stock injectors, stock cams, stock 3.2 bottom end, stock intake, stock tb, the maf i switched out too is a linclon 80mm but it didnt matter nothing changed so i just put the 73 back on in case it does start i know that one did run.
how would i be sure its the cam sensor or the crank sensor it there a way to figure that out before spending a whole day replacing a crank sensor and finding out thats not it? the cam sensor is easy so i think il swap out a spare one i have and hope its that and not the cps.

its not the cam sensor i just swapped that out and it didnt change! so my next question is i have spark so if i have spark can the crank position sensor be bad? beacuse i thought if you had a bad cps there would be no spark.

Fred - Hes talking about Eric Stedinger's old car, although you wouldn't know by looking at it.

Mike, is your fuel pump priming when you turn on the ignition? Bad CPS would cause no spark.

Negative. Is your fuel pump priming? If not, you might have the same problem I have with the CCRM being old/bad. Whack it with a screwdriver. Heck, whack it with a screwdriver anyways and see what happens.

cranking too fast? does it sound like its out of time while cranking? like a skip? sounds like a tb has slipped.

from your cranking diag.

If its Erics old car, I would tear into the crank area first, those guys had like a 10psi compressor, that would never tighted the crank pulley tight enough, which over time was diag'ed as "crank cancer". if its not all tight in there, the timing sprocket will rock and destroy the woodruff key, crank and pulley.

seen over 10 cars that this was done to!

the crank is still attached to the balancer beacuse all the belts are turning including the timing belt, if i pull the oil fill cap i can see the cam turnung. so the timing belt is still moving and the timing chains are still moving cause the front cam turns. but i dont know if they are in time guess il pull the upper timing cover.
hey kirk you work on this kind of crap all the time so il take some advice if you offer it what would you do next?

update

well i finally got to work on it again last night and it was the cps. so i guess you can be getting spark if you have a bad cps. cause i replaced the cps and now it runs fine, i did have to replace spark plugs. they were fouled out from all the cranking and no starting. and the oil needs changed cause its washed down with gas. but the important part is my car is back on the road for this weekend
:hdance: :hdance: :hdance:

thanks to all who tried to help with advise and trouble shooting

?? did you pull the codes Before, or After switching out the chip?? if after, then you would have gotten rid of the stored codes...

try getting the car running again, even for under 5 mins, it should get a code.

from what you described, it points right to CPS...if you havent done the routine maintenance to this motor yet, you might as well start with that anyway.

edit: NM you replaced the cps, and found that it was your problem already...
