hey guys, my green plus is burnin oil like a champ. probably a quart every 300 miles if not more. i know it needs a 60k tuneup but i am wondering if that is linked to the oil burn. the plugs and wires arent great, its not leakin it though, it is burning it. what r some common problems that would lead to oil burning?? could my rings be bad?? the motor has 174k on it. it ****** me off because my red 89 has the same milage and it runs like a ***** ape. i am gonna tune it up here as soon as i can get a spot cleared in my garage. anyone have any ideas on what to check for?? im gonna be ****** if i gotta tear into the internals of this motor to fix the problem. this is my daily driver for the next 4 months.

thanx

The "60K" will not address oil burning.

Excessive oil consumption will be one or more of the following:

Oil rings - requires a ring job to repair

Valve stem seals and guides - seals can be replaced in situ. Guides require head removal.

PCV system - can suck oil into the intake.

The first two can be diagnosed with a combination of vacuum and wet/dry compression tests. The PCV system can be disabled to remove it as a possibility.

Steve,
i was informed that the heads do not have to be removed to do the valve stem seals. apparently there is an "essential tool kit" that includes a stem seal removal tool. though when i did my stem seals, i removed the heads...was replacing head gaskets anyway.

Hey Sean,
Remove the oil fill cap, start it up and see how much pressure comes from the engine out of the hole. If it shoots a bunch of air/vapor like a smokestack, you have excess blowby. It could be pressurizing the crankcase too much, pushing oil past the rings.

Are you sure it's not leaking oil? 1 quart per 300 miles is very excessive. I would guess that it didn't run quite the same as a "normal" SHO. Perhaps the oil might be leaking onto the exhaust and burning it off while running so you don't notice a leak? If it's internal and burning that much I'd swap the engine rather than rebuild!

Did you do the blowby check? Or the PCV valve/hoses? If they check out OK, then do a dry/wet compression check. That may or may not work, since the oil rings (lower ones) may be stuck and the compression rings not.

It could be a slipped intake gasket. When you pull each spark plug, there might be one or 2 that are totally cruddy compared to the others. Try tightening the intake before removing it. You might get lucky and the gasket be ok, and not sucked in (missing a piece).
