I've got an inherited Taurus that was broken into. They tore up the ignition and the key lock release lever. Has anyone replaced this and is it an easy job? I can start the car by pushing on the lever with a screwdrive but I'd like to replace it eventually. Should I go to the dealer? Thanks.

Very easy to fix. Remove the lower plcastic portion below the ignition and then put the ignition in the run position, look underneath the ingnition lock and there will be a spot to push up about 1/8 of a inch. Use the back of a small drill bit or something. Just push that in and then pull it out. To install a new one just slide it in and turn it off and replace the cover and your done.

Hey great thread, mine is somehow messed up too. The thing has been not lining up with the "inner key hole".. that is the outside is spinning freely of it. Worse yet it will start without the key by twisting it. Is it hard to replace it and get it to work with the same key? Or do you have to have it rekeyed somehow? Thx.

Your just best off to go to the scrap yard and find a car with the keys still in it. Maybe a lock smith could key it the same I dont know.

I just got a new cylinder and had it keyed to my original key for $22.00 total last month. Had the sloppy key thing which at times would not shut off all the current and drain the battery. Very easy and should have done it 2 years ago.

AutoZone has a new cylinder for $20.00.

What about the tab that you have to pull on to let you turn the key in the first place? It's all chewed up and even when I replace the ignition I don't think that will fix it. Any ideas?
