well i found two 1997 SHOs in the same car lot. one is silver with crome wheels with like 115K on it an a black one with like little gold specs in it with only 70K on it. he wants 5K for the silver and 6K for the black one. what im wondering is 115K a lot of miles for that V8 motor. and i here thare a little bit slower than the 2nd gen so what does it take to get these do go like 14s. thanks to anyone who replys to these thread

The concerns I would have at that mileage are tranny life and welded cams. Tranny condition is a crap shoot, some last long some just don't. A dealer will not have them welded and likely not be aware if the previous owner had them done either. As for 14's, good luck. It's doable but not the reason to own a GenIII IMO.

Check Ebay. There are similar cars listed there right now and they are priced better than your friendly dealer. With a little bit of research a good Gen3 can be had for short money.

I would go with the lower milage one. Every time you get in the car with higher miles you will think to yourself "I like this...but I wish I would have gotten the one with lower miles." It's just better piece of mind. You are more likely to have problems with a higher milage vehicle than a low milage vehicle. It all depends on maintence, too.

Why does everyone feel that the gen II ATX is faster than a gen 3 ATX? The gen II weighs more and has less horsepower AND less torque than a gen III. I mean, of course if you are comparing a gen III ATX to a gen 2 MTX thats not a fair comparison. Also...I test drove a mint 70k mile 95 ATX before I bought my 98 and it didn't feel any faster than my Duratec equipped Taurus with 200HP. The only obvious reason it was quicker was more wheelspin. What gives?

now i think what you say about the GEN II be heavyer is false. iv seen stecs on both and the GEN III is heavyer. and your right my parents had a 1998 Taurus SE it wast any slower than a ATX Gen II SHO. i just want one cause know one knows what the **** it its and its a nice cruser but i would like to have some GO to it. it cant be that hard to take a few tenths off of a GEN III

Gen III ATX's are alot nicer cars than Gen II ATX's hands down, the Gen III is more solid, has better brakes, and handles alot better.

This coming from someone who has had both and still has the Gen III! ;)

Gen 2's have iron blocks. Gen III's have extensive use of aluminum, in the trunk, engine and hood. Everyone always assumes the gen II is lighter because it seems like a smaller car. Technology changed a lot from 95 to 96. The curb weight of a 1996 SHO is 3442...the curb weight for a 1995 SHO is 3600 pounds. The gen III manages this while being something like 5 inches longer than a gen 2. This is ATX vs. ATX. :salute:

So I ask...why does everyone assume the V8 SHO is slower than the V6 SHO ATX when the V8 SHO weighs less, and has more horsepower AND torque?

Go to your local track and put you SHO on the scale. You will be quite surprised.

Mine is 3640 without me in it ;) One guy with a Gen II here (I cannot recall the exact number) but it was in the 150+ pound less range.

Why does Ford put the curb weight as 3400 then?!?! If yours was 3640 thats still only 40 pounds heavier than a gen II. According to Fords curb weight, anyway.

I'm honestly not trying to be mean here or anything...just trying to figure it out. :bonk: Does Ford lie!?

probably the same reason the GTP is faster than an V8 SHO, even though the power ratings and weight are similar...

My GEN 3 weighs in around 3800 lbs with me in it. The reason the GEN 3 limited is due to the tranny programming. I can assure you that with minimal modification they will be faster than a Gen 2 ATX.

I had mine weighted at a truck weight station once when it was much newer and had no mods. With no people in it and well under a quarter tank of fuel, it came in at 3480 LBs, IIRC. Just a bit over the Ford stated weight, and that could easily have been the gas.

So about 30 lbs more than mine, and that sounds to be the extra gas, since I was closer to dry. Thanks Ian. I suspect the Ford specification numbers are pretty close to correct, if not dead on.
