Well, my '98 has an 80 liter gas tank, and I think they all do, from my reading of the SHO list and which, having gone to dry, I can affirm is correct, and I figure there was about another liter or two of gas filler neck and lines, since I got just under 82 liters in when it happened. A liter is close enough to a quart (.996 US, or something like that) that we can figure the tank is about 20 US gallons (which are different than Imperial gallons, by the way). But if we assume you are talking US throughout here, you can have at least 137 lbs. of gas in the car. :)

I was under the impression that GenIII's had 16 gallon fuel tanks. If it is indeed 20 gallons my gas mileage really sucks.

I believe the tank is between 16-18 gallons. I was on E with the gas light on and had to drive it for about 10 miles with the gas light on, when I filled up, it filled up 16.8 gallons of gas, though? So I'm guessing it's 18. I'm pretty sure my 2000 SEL had a 16 gallon tank though because I swear I never put more than like 15 gallons in it. Can anyone confirm?

What would the size of the tank have to do with your gas mileage? If you're filling up and the pump stops at 15 gallons and you have traveled 300 miles you're getting 20 mpg. Doesn't have anything to do with the size of the gas tank.

you don't have anything. your parents have the gen3.

 Just because my mom drives it doesn't mean it's not mine, ok? Do you know if I pay the payment or if I bought the car? NO! So STFU! :nono: It also wouldn't mean I'm not knowledgeable about the subject. I don't need your ******* unknowledgeable opinions! :madflame:

Why are you in this section of the board anyhow? Just to stir up trouble? You don't even own a Gen 3!

Well, if you run it dry and then fill it until you have gas sitting at the top of the filler neck and not draining down any more, you are going to put in over 80 liters, which is 20 gallons +. I do not think my '98 to be any different than yours. They were all made in the same place. My date of manufacture is 15march98, by the way, or so the data sheet claims.

Your tank size really is not going to change the gas mileage, other than by carrying around a little extra weight. If you are filling to the click off, you are putting the around same amound in the tank each time. And if you are willing to spend the time to dribble it in, you will get about 5 more gallons in after the initial click off and then can be sure you are filling to exactly the same spot each time to figure your consumption. That is what I did for a year or so when testing the milage under different conditions.

I think it is the convoluted shape of the filler neck that causes the problem. It makes it harder for the neck to clear once the tank fluid level is higher as air gets trapped a bit. The only way to get the tank completely full is just to continue running in gas at very slow speed until it literally gets to the top of the filler neck and no longer drains down. It is time consuming, but it will put in about 5 more gallons that way, which for long highway trips can be handy.
