I've been searching the forums and found a few threads on my problem but no definate solutions.

Ok.
Today I was getting my oil changed and before my 94atx went on the lift a rattling noise came from the engine. The sound is eminating from the left side,on the front of the engine, under the left portion of the upper timing housing. At normal idle the noise is present and at giving throttle it goes away. The sound is kinda like a resinating rattle and i could feel a slight vibration coming from the housing (funny enuf the sound sounds like a velociraptor from Jurassic Park).I have no check engine lights, I just changed the oil, and the car runs great at normal speeds past idle.Me thinks the problem lies in a faulty or irregular timing tensioner???Maybe I was low on oil and there wasnt enuf pressure to hold the tensioner in place???Im stumped!FORD technicians gave me crap and wanted $200 for them to even pop the cover to see whts up and no gurantees!I'm debating to call the person that serviced my car a mr.Don Donellson.I'm asking for help from florida people before i go off the deep end.Thank you all.----alaric

Don Donnelson is a great guy and will help you out. I think you're right, it sounds like the timing belt is slapping up against the cover. Tensioner is crapped out. Good luck getting another one... lol j/k

It is not a major job at all. Requires you to remove the cross over tube from the intake, serp belt, and timing cover. The timing belt needs to come off but this is all minor 30 second stuff. A SHO beginner should be able to do this job in a few hours. There are several skilled SHO mechanics in your area that i am sure would be willing to do the job for ya as long as you provide lunch/beer. :thumb:

I didnt think crank cancer made a noise. Could be wrong.

Only way to check for that would be to see if you have an orange(ing) timing belt (caused by the metal shavings of the pulley/keyway rusting on the belt) or a wobbly balancer pulley.

the way to tell crank cancer is by noise, from my limmited understanding, crank cancer is when the woodruff key wears out more of its slot in the crankshaft.........when it gets bad it will make loud noise... theres some videos around here of it.........

always torque to spec

timing belt tensioner. I had my 94 ATX do the same thing. You can still get these new but they are expensive.

i looked around for a tensioner.Where are they at "new".if i could find a brand spankin new one, im in!On the other hand i've got the original mechanic, mr. Don Donellson, that completed my 60k going to look at the front of the engine sunday afternoon. So he'll open her up and give me the diagnosis and or the solution.I'll give you all an update.Meanwhile anyone feel free to submit any input. BTW anyone know of any good atx tranny upgrade?I was thinking upgraded gears/planetaries/fluid/clutch/tranny cooler---basically an entire rebuild with upgraded/performance parts. Thanks

there isn't much u can do to the SHO tranny...... besides put in a D4u1 computer........ if its a 94+ it should have that already though

external tranny cooler wouldn't be a bad idea........ other then that... thats about all.......... I figure theres lots of money to be spent elsewhere on the SHO before u need to worry about the transmission

Mobile 1 synthetic automatic transmission fluid will help with the heat and can extend the life of the transmission.

I can sell u my cooler setup off the 94........

I think I changed the fittings in the case and ran straight to a Hayden aftermarket type cooler........ I can sell u the fittings, hoses, cooler... just plug into your transmission and top back off with fluid........

they have a pretty complicated setup, and run into the radiator as well.......

point being 15 year old rusty SHO's are prone to springing a tranny leak on those old ass metal lines at any minute...........

hey thanks guys.I just gotback from Mr.Donellsons yesterday and he solved the problem.Yes the ailment was abad timing tensioner.when thecover came offand he touched the belt it hadf a lot of sag in it. he touched the tensioner andit prettymuch dissentegrated as he was removing it! I lost about 80% of the bearings in the tensioner and thatis what caused the vibrating sound b/c thebearings were missing and the housing for them was unravelling.by a stroke of luck he had a spare tensioner and pully!!! that 200miles to s.Florida woulda been for nothing! ohyea, what do you want forthe tranny cooler or parts from your 94?
