Well, after only about 1 week of having my car back on the road, SHO Boom strikes again. i was out having some fun with the car and was running a maxima. i started to slow down and downshifted, and the next thing i hear is a loud "thud" when i let off the clutch. didnt even do it fast mind you. so i put it in neutral and the car comes clicking to a stop. i look around under the car and notice dark fluid leaking from the tranny. i limp the car home, it clicking the whole way. i couldnt even get it outta 5th when i got to my house, even with the engine off. so there it sits, huge puddle underneath and stuck in 5th. did i blow the diff? 2nd did grind a bit when cold and 3rd would grind at a high rpm shift into it. what do ya guys (and gals) think? Could be my excuse to pick up an new tranny and a quaife and pop it in. anyone know how much you could find a good shape tranny for?

What color was the fluid? When I blew my dif(4 hours after buying the car madflame [sorry, still a little resentful...]) it had the same symptoms but with first and second. I couldn't get it in either one. If I did I couldn't get it out. It is slightly possible that you just killed a halfshaft(although that won't explain your 5th gear problem). Good luck and I'm sorry to hear this.

Well i didnt go outside yet to look at it today, but at night looking under the car with a flashlight, it appeared to be a very dark, blackish color

Figured...well i went to go look at it the car comes out of gear and goes into any gear now, and even will drive foward. however, it will NOT roll backwards past a certain point, therefore making it effectively stuck in my driveway. im trying to decide whether or not to put it in the garage, but i might as well. i'll have to tackle it sooner or later

What needs to be done to a 3.2 for it to accept a flywheel? I'm getting ideas...
Nothing. Old *coughshoshopcough* wives tale. It will bolt right on.

haha thanks man....upon further inspection, it would seem that my diff isnt the problem. i think it might be a halfshaft. there is no crack in the casing, and fluid only around the halfshaft leading towards the passenger side. the car does drive, with the exception of clicking on foward momentum, and an inability to roll backwards for more than 1 foot or so past a click from the foward movement. i have it on jackstands now, and when i spin one wheel, the other turns the opposite way freely, and there is no clicking. what do you guys think?

Check out that passenger side halfshaft a little more. The leaking fluid could be just from a bad axle seal at the tranny. Also look at the center mount bearing which is where the passenger side axle is mounted to the car.

well upon further inspection, it seems strangly enough that the leak is coming from the boot that covers where the shift linkage goes into the tranny. infact, there seems to be a hole in it, however the hole looks like its supposed to be there. the fluid mainly drips out of that hole, and i think a little at the base of the boot.

Either way, it sounds like some damage could have happened inside the tranny. The bearings can only be removed by dropping the trans and opening it up. All seals except the input shaft seal can be replaced from the outside. The shift shaft seal is the easiest to replace IMO.

Best thing is to remove one of the halfshafts, preferably the driver's side since it is easiest to see, look inside the tranny with a flashlight and if you don't see 2 short pins that meet at one long one that goes all the way across then you've blown the tranny. Best & easiest way to rule out the diff is to start there.

That boot is covering the shift shaft seal. (Edit: and yes the hole is supposed to be there, it lets air escape when compressed and released.) I've tried to replace that seal on my car 2 or 3 times in the last year, yet mine still seems to leak a little bit. I have a feeling it's not the seal, but maybe a loose tolerance of the shift shaft itself, letting fluid leak by. There is a spring in the shift shaft seal so I don't see why it wouldn't be sealing right. Follow Bizzy's advice and pull out one of the axles and take a look inside. Be careful while removing them not to overstress the joints of them. Good luck.

Looking at the car, it seems that the passenger side axle isnt in as far as it could be, and the drivers side looks like it may be in too far. is that possible for them to shift in like that? im gonna pull the passenger axle and see if i can maybe re seat it, and resal the leak. the leak is only coming from the axle seal, not the shift shaft seal. its only leaking down onto that.
