I can't figure this ABS out!

So...

I bought Greenbean, found that the ABS computer was unplugged...plugged it in, reset battery, etc, and I have an ABS light that stays on as soon as I start the car. I looked around and found a missing relay right next to the ABS module, so I replaced it, reset the battery, and cleaned the wheel sensors, and I STILL have an ABS light...

What else could be wrong?

I have had the exact same problem in the past. Your problem is most likely the wheel speed sensors.........they're expensive, and hard to tell exactly which one is the problem, so the best thing to do is unplug the abs computer like it was......these cars didn't have that great of an abs system anyway. Mine's been unplugged for a year, and I actually like the feel of the brakes better now.

Thing is, he received a code 17 and searching didn't help. So if anyone knows where to find the code troubleshoot deal, or knows what code 17 is, please inform us. We have been looking and cleaning things all over. First I found the ABS module unplugged, then the relay connector hidden away without the relay box. Fixed both, cleaned the wheel sensors and the light is still there. I'd rather know what the code is, besides pulling things off the 93 to test and see.

The most I could come up with for a ABS Code 17 is:

"Possible Sources: Reference voltage failure, caused by high/low battery voltage, main power relay, main fuse, wire harness or damaged anti-lock brake control module."

Sounds to me like your ABS module either isn't getting powered properly, or is damaged. There are several fuses to check in both the engine and passenger compartment boxes that feed the ABS system, look over your OM for their exact location.

The main power feed looks to be a Gray w/Yellow stripe wire (GR/Y) that runs from the engine compartment fuse box to pin #53 of the module. It should be approx. battery voltage @ the module, you can check it against a good ground with a multimeter(Key ON).

Reference voltage looks to be located at pin #3 of the module, an Orange w/Yellow stripe wire (O/Y) that should be a minimum of 10V @ the module.

P.S. Just curious, what process did you use to pull the ABS codes?

There should be two 12 awg wires attached to the upper radiator support on the drivers side via 2x8mm bolts. One of them is for the ABS pump relay. Check to see that there is a CLEAN ground at this terminal. It took me 2 months to figure that problem out.

The ABS light won't go out until all faults are cleared AND the car is driving faster than 25 mph....

ABS codes can be pulled with a paperclip, just like the CEL codes. Just jumper the TRIGGER lead (LB/Y) wire of the ABS TEST connector to ground and turn the key to RUN.

you can also ck each sensor with a dvom set on a/c volts. unplug the leads to the wheel sensors and spin the wheel, you should see a positive volt reading and negative volt reading. also ck the leads for abrasion and heat damages, ask netviper about abs and exhuast pipes.

I will check the fuses in the passenger compartment...I've checked the fuses in the engine compartment...

And I found out that the ABS relay was GONE. I put a new one in, reset the battery, and the code still didn't go away...

I also cleaned up the wheel sensors, and I cleaned up the connection from the harness to the ABS module...nothin'.

Automatically, once all conditions are met. Disconnecting the battery doesn't do it.

My ABS light in my dash has been on forever....I would really hate to disconnect the ABS module. Muchos gracie!

Okay, I had my car totaly redone in 2001. I took it to an SHO mechanic here in jersey.

The work done on the car was a 120k service.

Shortly after the work was done, the ABS light came on.
At first the light would only come on infrequently. Then one day I hit a *** hole and it stayed on.

I tried not to pay attention to it but now i think its time for me to fix it.

I took a look at the reciepts from when the mechanic worked on the car back in 2001 and i noticed that he pulled several codes pertaining to the ABS. These are two digit codes that I am unfamiliar with. I'm pretty sure they relate to the ABS light being on.

CODES:
43- Right rear sensor
44- Left rear sensor
63- Motor speed sensor
67- pump relay

Could this also be used as a diagnostics method. Like I want to hit the brakes on dirt and make sure all 4 wheels actually grip but the anti-lock wont let me. Could I turn off the car, unplug the ECU for the antilock, start the car up do a few non antilock stops. Turn the car off plug it back in and have everying be good. No fault lights or anything?
