Yes, you read correctly, I broke my SHO. As I sit here typing, I look over at my broken, white SHO. Not only the hood, but the rear valve cover, intake manifold, A/C compressor and both the front and rear exhaust manifolds went flying as the car bounced off its roof. The front of the body also came separated from the lower chassis pan.

All of this after it fell from its normal perch on the upper shelf on my computer desk and landed on its roof on the desk. A few drops of model glue should be able to put the Ertl SHO model back together again, but maybe I should place Humpty Dumpty in a safer spot.

I hope you take this in the good humor in which it was intended. It is a beautiful, but cool (56F) day here in Dallas, and I was enjoying driving around with my 22.5 month-old daughter on a few errands. I think my daughter is even bitten with the SHO bug as she squeals with excitement when those secondaries sing: "Yeah Daddy!" Even without prompting, she says, "Daddy's motor - vrooom!" She is definitely my child. :)

LOL! I thought it was the real thing at first too. My daughters (3 years and 15 months, respectively) also like the rush of acceleration :) My oldest will throw her hands in the air in 1st and second gears. It's pretty amusing.

Yes!

I have three children. My youngest, 31 month old Mike Jr., when asked where he would like to ride...Mommy's minivan or daddy's SHO - of course you guys know the answer! LOL.

She must have hit the redline at least 5 times today (without my daughter in the car). Another normal day in the life of a SHO. Knocking on the proverbial wood at 267,925 miles.

Ahhh... It's funny how the secondaries have that effect on people! Just keep giving her that daily medicine from Doctor Yamaha, and she'll stay happy! :D

As for the SHO, I thought you were talking about the real one! "Scott killed an SHO?" :p

hey Scott, there has been a lot of talk lately about replacing the rod bearings. Have you (or how many times have you) done this?

The only services performed on my engine have been the 60K preventative maintenance replacements and adjustments. Oh, a few sensors (oil pressure, oil level and knock sensors), but the bearings are all still the originals. I have heard rod knock before on other SHOs, but fortunately have not heard that sound on my engine. I believe it has to do with a history of rigorous and detailed maintenance by a non-abusive owner.

I bought this car new in January 1991 and planned to keep it for a long time. I have treated this car from day one as if it were going to grow older with me. Drop clutch starts, slamming shifts and long oil change intervals have not been part of this car's history. I take care of myself and I take care of my car.

My dad taught me that to spend my hard-earned money on something and then not take care of it was like throwing money away. I think my dad's advice was true and I have certainly gotten my money's worth in service and enjoyment with my trusty SHO. Knocking on wood....

Here is what the lower end of my engine looked like at around 260,000 miles when I replaced the oil pan seals and starter. You can still see horizontal honing marks in the cylinder with the lower edge of the piston skirt in the upper left of the image and the absence of up and down scoring on the cylinder wall. Check out the cleanliness of the oil pan and oil pickup screen.

My dad has told me the same thing, and as I get older I realize it even more and more.
Keep up the good work and enjoy the beatiful weather as I freeze up here in Montreal! :) It is about 20F degrees and we're suppose to get 6 inches of snow tonight. Luckily the SHO is hybernating nicely in a heated underground garage. :)

For some reason I fell for the beginning of your story. shoot Gullible I guess. I love the sound of the secondaries. The other day as I was filling up, I heard that glorious sound and before turning around I already knew that it was a SHO. Sure enough a nice 2nd Gen Red SHO comes flying by.

My 4 year old daughter squeals with glee and was SOO glad when I got the 93 back running again, and always tells me...GO FAST DADDY!..till I hit her with the secondaries!

Scott,

That was indeed fun.

Is the ERTL model of the SHO a diecast, or a plastic model? If it is a plastic kit, is it still available? What year SHO is the kit? What scale is it, 1/24th, 1/25th? I have to have one of these! Is it a new ERTL release, or an out of production run kit?

I have a collection of over 500 model kits in my basement. Most are military and historic aircraft. A small percentage of my collection is automobiles.

I have to have a SHO. It will fit in perfectly with my 1930 Packard Boattail, 1937 Cord, 1932 Deusenberg Pheaton, 1966 Shelby Mustang GT 350, 1969 SS AMX, and other great classic automobiles.

Just think about it Scott, you have a SHO and a daughter that is daddy's little girl! Life is good. If you think a SHO cost money to maintain, just wait! Jack (rangerj)

The model is a plastic 1/24th scale, 1991 SHO by ERTL. My mother had found two of them many years ago and presented them to me. One of them was destroyed in transit during a move. You could contact ERTL to see if they still offer the model. The engine has many chromed components: intake, valve covers, alternator, A/C compressor and exhaust manifolds. There is significant detail in most of the components and the hood is removeable to display the engine.

I have another SHO toy: a 1/24 scale, gray, 1989 SHO, also by ERTL. It appears to be from the same mold as the ERTL model, but there is less detail in the underbody, the hood is fixed and the upper body is screwed onto the lower pan. I saw this toy at a Ford dealership's service department waiting area toy box. The driver side A-pillar was cracked and the wheels were pressed into the wheel wells, preventing them from turning on the solid axles. After adjusting the wheels and telling a few stories about my car to the parts tech that was helping me, he said that I could take it. Nice guy. My daugter is rolling it across the floor as I type. Vroom!

Thanks Scott,

Now that I know that the model of the SHO exists, I can start hitting the model car shows and swap meets. It is that time of year anyway.

We had a little snow last night, you know that white flakey stuff we get up here this time of year. I do a lot less on cars this time of year.

My main interest in models is aircraft, so I pick up an occassional car if I just happen to "trip" over something interesting, like the Packard boat tail. I missed the SHO kit when ERTL released it.

Anyways, thanks for the info and I'm sorry to hear about your SHO. VROOM, VROOM! Don't you love it! Jack

You know guys, this is way off topic, but I can't wait to have kids. Just the thought of my son or daughter sitting in the back seat and squealing when the secondaries opened or saying something like "Daddy's motor - vroom, vroom" is amazing. I can't wait, but I've got to finish school and get married first, so it'll be a few years, but oh how much fun they will be! Enjoy them while they're young. Peace guys.
