I had my AC converted to 134A by a shop 4 days ago (all leaks fixed, system vac down and converted) My ac clutch is slipping (started last night) . It wil engage when I first turn the AC on and work fine for the first couple of cycles and then it will start slipping when it tries to engage. I took one of the air gap shims out last night to no avail. It looks as though the clutch is warped the gap is not consistant. I called auto zone to order a clutch but they want to know which compressor the car has, the fs10 or the 10p15f. How do I tell which one is which, and how do you get the pully part of the clutch off? I took the front part off last night very easy but I dont see what holds the main body(pully part) on the compressor.

sorry I forgot to add that its a 93 mtx,

They keep asking me if its factory air or dealer installed air I thought all SHOs came with factory air.

Look on the compressor housing, the part that faces the drivers fender. It will have a tag, with the make and model on it. If the compressor is on the car, getting under the front end to view may be easier. I have only gen 1's and the compressors I replaced have been 10p15f models. There maybe more , but that's what I have seen on my cars. Mike Kelly

Were you able to get the clutch gap on the low side of spec?

I just had a similar problem. When the clutch was slipping, I tried hitting it with a thire iron to get it to engage. It didn't engage, but I could tell the coil was magentized as it pulled on the tire iron. I got the gap down to the low side of spec and it worked.

I ordered a clutch from auto zone and it has not come in yet. My clutch is warped. It alternates from having a large gap and rubbing. I still hope someone will tell me how to get the main part of the clutch (the part with the pully) off

Get a hold of Rangerj (that is his name here on the forum). He is the AC guru....

What it is, is the rubber inbetween the inner and outer clutch rings, breaks down...... causing the plate to run unevenly...... I know, mine has gone the same way, I plan on changing the pulley and clutch assy when I convert the a/c over to R134.....

Good point about the rubber breaking down. That's part of the outer clutch face, IIRC. If that's the problem and the coil part still works, you could just swap in the new outer clutch piece. That will be an easier job than doing the coil part too.

The coil is retained by a snap ring. I haven't done it myself, but I believe others have said you have to take the compressor loose in order to get to the snap ring (freon lines still connected). As Slo SHO said, look for a rangerj post, I think he has one out there on the subject.
