I'm trying to get wires out of my 16-pin connector in the back of my head unit. I've been told to use an Xacto knife and lift that metal piece (the one that is keeping the wire in place inside the connector) up and then pull the wire out, but a couple of my friends and I tried that for a long time with no progress... shrug headbang doh

We pulled down the side clip things on the connector to see if we could get a better angle but that didn't help.

Any tips?

I haven't taken out the head unit on mine, but from every wiring connector that I have ever come across on a car, you often need to first snap a lock out of the back side of the connector.
Generally, on the side of the connector that the wires come out of, there will be a (red usually) piece of plastic that needs to slide out towards the side with the wires. To do this, use a small (jewelry sized) screwdriver and snap it out of the connector. Then, your best bet is to use this same screwdriver from the side of the connector without the wires (the side that goes into the head unit). There will be a small plastic tab that you need to CAREFULLY pry in one direction while applying LIGHT tension on the wire (while pulling on the wire lightly away from the connector)
Sometimes they can be a PITA, but if you find a good, small screwdriver, you should be good to go. Good luck!
