Hi guys - I have my axle out on the passenger side to replace the MTX axle seal. I tried to use a pick to remove the seal but it won't budge out of the trans. Any suggestions? Best way? Can i pry it a bit from the casing? Just thought I would ask before I screw anything up! Thanks!

Go to the parts store and buy this. Just make sure you don't gouge the outer wall when removing it. I use a big axle nut socket to install the new seal.

There are a couple of sizes of that tool shown above by Irish Pride, so ask to see all the sizes that are available.

I always try to remove the old seal from the top, so if you do accidently scratch the machined surface that the seal sits in, at least it is not a natural river that easily drains your oil. Have some sort of sealer on hand to fill in the scratch, just in case.

Make sure you pre - oil the seal so that it does not have a dry start.

I just left mine in when I pulled the axle halfshaft out. I tried for the life of me, but I simply could not get the seal to budge an inch. The rubber was good and so far no leaks.

iirc, it has a metal lip on the outside of the case, and I have pried on that lip with a screwdriver. Chad's tool idea is the correct thing to do though...

I tried that as well with a very thin screw driver, but the seal was so flush with the surface
of the transmission I couldn't get it off. Also there's not a lot of room in there to pry or tap with a screwdriver.

Yeah, that or you can also take and put a prybar on the inside lip of the seal and pop it out. That way you don't risk damaging the case surfaces. If you scratch the case lightly don't freak out, just use a little anaerobic sealant on the seal, it pays to do this anyway whether you scratch the surface or not. And remember, a little goes a LONG way.

Putting a prybar on the inside lip there is a chance you could scratch or nick the inner surface of the transmission where the CV shaft goes into. That's a bit TOO scary for me to stick a prybar in there. And again when you got the car up on jackstands there really isn't a lot of room in there to be sticking prybars or long screwdrivers.

I always put a little bead of Anaerobic sealant around the outer edge of all my axle seals. That trick really does insure a leak free seal.
