Remove the rearview mirror in a Gen 2 ? I see they have a 'tool' for that , but can you get away whith out using that?

I mean, to remove the mirror off the tab that is glued on the windshield ... you can take them off. I know you have to slide a 'tool' under it and pry down and up at the same time, but I don't know how hard is to hard...

I just ended up putting a regular mirror with the set screw on mine. The mirror on my car had fallen off the glass and I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to get the shoe out of it...

Did you ever figure this out? I got an automatic one from a 95 Bronco yesterday. I thooght it had a set screw... I hop in and it had the notch... Sooo, I flip open my allen wrench thingy and pick the 2nd from the smallest and shove it up in the notch, nothing. So I pick 2 more up(maybe 1/8")... Shove it up in there and a gentle tug up on the mirror and I'm the new owner of a nice auto mirror!

What's so weird about it. They asked how to get one of the mirrors without the setscrew off the windshield and I figured out how...

If it just slides off then your clip isn't holding it on the tab on the glass. The thing I was referring to was pushing an allen wrench up in the notch which releases the clip from biting on the tab. Blue was wondering about the apparent special tool for this. There is usually a way around a "special" tool.

Yeh, the one in my 92 is the lock type. In the Ford Book they make soem stupid tool to pop it off. This is the same idea as the radio release. I was told by a Ford tech to use a screw driver that fits and tug it off.

I doesn't seem to really "lock" pre-se... There is an edge to the clip that kinda just bites the tab on the windshield. I tried the small screwdriver trick on my original one as it had fallen off during the 2 years it sat abandonded to no avail... Then I just got a regular set screw one for it when I had the windshield replaced (had a crack). It is nice to know the "trick" for it now, though! It got me a nice auto dimmer one!
