Ive been told two different ways to tighten your clutch cable. The first way is turn your car off and put it in 1st gear and put your foot under the clutch pedal. Then glently pull up, then I guess you will hear a click if it needed to be tighten. Ive also been told that you just have to get in your car and pull up on the clutch pedal. Do I have to put it into first gear, and if I do do this do you think it will help my clutch last longer cuz it is on its last leg, its slippin really bad. Im hopefully gonna get the new clutch put in by next week.

It does not matter what gear or if the car is on or off or if you are stopped or rolling. Just pull upwards on the clutch pedal with about 10 pounds of force. If you hear a click, then some slack was taken up in the cable. The owner's manual says to do this every 5,000 miles, but more often would not hurt.
