I have a set of low milage 3.0 heads to put on my 3.2 MTX. They have been sitting around for the last 10 years not on an engine but stored in a basement with valve covers on them.

I want to change the valve stems seals but have had trouble finding anything here on the forum on how to change them.

Is there a procedure?

If so, what is it? If not, explain then how to do it.

What tools do I need to do the job?

It's on the shophoenix site. With the heads off the car it's a cakewalk as long as you have the rotunda tool kit.

Amen to that , you absolutely need the rotunda kit at least to remove the valve springs. Ive tried some other cheap ebay stuff in the past , and its a PITA.

If the heads are on the car , you will need an adaptor to put compressed air in the cylinder through the spark plug hole so that the valves dont fall in the cylinder.

If you have a spare shortblock , temp bolt the heads on it while doing the springs , it helps alot when you put the pressure on the springs with the tools.

To remove the seals , you can do it with pliers if your careful , to install , theres also a tool in the rotunda kit to do it right.

Thanks guys.

The heads are still in the boxes I got them in. And I can come up with a spare block to mount them to. Would it help if that block was mounted to an engine stand?

Would it be wise to try to borrow a 3.0 Rotunda kit from someone? Or should I go to flea-bay and pick one up for my own uses?

Yes , if the block is on an engine stand , its even better.

For the rotunda kit , it rarely comes under 150$ , I think theres one at 250$ right now. If you think its the last time you will do those kind of jobs , rent it. If you plan on playing with SHOs for quite a long time , buy it. It's almost like an investment , you can always sell it later on. These kit are kinda rare , I doupt the price on the things will drop anytime soon.

One click of the search button and it is amazing what you will find....

...I was also going to link you to shophoenix, but that is already in the thread.

When I built my motor I had the machine shop replace the valve stem seals and pressure test the heads along with making sure they were cleaned up and properly surfaced.

It was a couple hundred if I remember correctly...but my motor now has 80k on it....doesn't leak or burn a drop of oil.

That's the route I went, and the route I sugguested to him too. ;) I don't think it's the "right job" for him. The place here in town charged me $300, including the valve grind. :)

I got quoted for 400$ for a resurface and a 3 angle valve job at the performance shop over here.
