How do I remove water outlet housing?

Hi,

This is my first time posting. I changed my radiator and figured I'd change my thermostat in the process. I purchased a torque wrench which didn't work correctly and I sheared off the bolt for the water outlet housing to which the thermostat connects. This part is behind the thermostat and has many hoses going in and out of it. I took off all the bolts and hoses, but can't seem to get it off. It looks like its connected to a long tube that goes under the fuel rails. Is there something I am missing here? Is there an easier way to replace he bolt than removing that whole water outlet assembly?

Is it loose or still tight? If it's tight, there is a nut hidden way underneath. If it's loose, and all the hoses are disconnected, it's just some good, old fashioned muscle. I've replaced a couple of these, and they are a pain. If you leave the T-stat snout on it gives you a handle on which to pull. It will eventually give, and then I would pull the crossover tube out and replace the O-rings on both ends. Better safe than sorry.

If you do pull the entire back thermostat housing off, you will need to pull the coolant line casting from the rear head at the same time. The two castings are connected by a short piece of hose (about 1" long) that is not flexible enough to let you remove JUST the back of the thermostat housing. You will need a water outlet gasket set for these gaskets plus the o-rings for the crossover tube. They are all in this set:

Welcome, Matt. Yeah, I did the same thing almost a month ago. It is frustrating.

Just follow what PitaSHO said, there should be 3 nuts on the thermostat housing and 4 nuts on on the other housing that shopartsnw referred to. It will take some pulling once you get all 7 of those nuts off. Once you have your new housing, put some new gaskets in there with a little bit of RTV on both sides of each of the new gaskets. Get the new o-rings for the cross-over tube, put your thermostat in and put it all back together, fill it up with coolant and enjoy the new found warmth. If for any reason you decide to move the fuel rail, just make sure you have all of the injector o-rings in the heads when the injectors go back in the heads. Ask me how I know.

I pulled the water outlet off. I didn't think to pull hard enough to get it off that tube. Hopefully I don't have any leaks once it's back in with new gaskets. You've all been a great help!
