Don't you have a first generation Sho? Basking in the Cali sun for over a decade, how the **** could you blame Ford. I could see if the car was only a couple of years old, but I think Ford will laugh at ya. But if you have the time, anythings worth a try.

Not Ford specifically, but we had a Grand Am that had "The Disease" - it was just outside of 5 years on the car, and we pushed for about 4 months before they finally agreed to repaint.

When my parents bought my 89 new, there were three black cars to chose from, Cougar XR7, T-bird SC, and the SHO. Thankfully my parents chose the SHO, otherwise, who knows what I'd be driving today. Anyway, being that it was in a small town, we knew who bought the SC and discovered both of our black cars were having issues with the paint within the first year. The issue being that the black would turn cloudy within a month. A good wax job would turn the paint back to black but within a month the paint would be cloudy. The dealership would not admit that Ford was at fault, saying that we had given our cars too many wax jobs and it had built up on the paint...whatever. In hindsight, maybe we should have pushed the issue further. 13 years later the SHO is still in the same condition. The SC was repainted several times trying to 'cure' this problem. Owner gave up and sold it after only a few years. Anyone else ever had/have this problem with late 80's black paint?

The Grand Nationals had paint issues that GM didn't want to take blame for. If you look at the rear pillars the paint should be cracking slightly. If its not then its a repaint. Its actually a good way to see if its in original condition.

You can check but I think the Ford and GM Paint Recalls are expired. Both Ford and GM where offering a paint recall for late 80's and early 90's because of paint pealing and cracking. If the car still was under warrenty it was free and if it was not, then it was $100 (Atleast that was how the GM worked). I had my 91 Camaro RS repainted for free due to cracking and the paint-clearcoat seperation problem. This was in 94. Not good for a 3 year old vehicle with 40K on the odometer. My cousin was a Ford Dealer Body Shop MGR. He was the one that told me about the Ford and GM recalls. My friend had his 88 Mustang painted because of bad fading. Check with your local dealer for more information and to see if this is still available.

In order the get the "recall" paint with dealer do you have to be the original owner or can you press the issue. I have a 92 MTX black that came from Minesota? or Wisconsin that detail escapes me at the moment...anyway.. the hood paint has little cracks nearest the front, but no pealing as yet.

I'm concerned now after reading a previous reply saying a guy repainted and it didn't fix his problem. I can only assume he went cheap on the job?

As for the SC owner having it repainted. I don't believe he had the car stripped to bare metal before having it repainted. If memory serves correct, I think he tried two separate times to fix the problem. The cloudy paint just wouldn't go away. Also forgot to add that the SHO came without the front bumper being clearcoated. Dealer refused to say it should have been clearcoated. Luckily my parents took care of having that done! Keep us all posted on any developments on this issue.
