Hot restart problems

I have a 93 with a auto that has a intermittent starting problem. I can start and restart the car many times in a day or week then once in a while it will not start.It cranks over just fine. If I leave it for about two hours it restarts fine and runs great. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. Mike

Is the Water pump weeping onto the crank sensor?

I had this problem on my red 94 from time to time.

If you experience this symptom, try cycling the key on for 4 seconds, then off, then on for 4 seconds again, and repeat this 4-5 times. If that solves your problem, you have one of the following issues:
bad fuel pump checkvalve, allowing pressure to bleed down,
bad injector, not shutting off completely, allowing pressure to bleed down,
bad gas, vaporizing in intake on hot soak.

If that does not solve your problem, then you have a spark issue, which could be any of the following:
sick crank sensor (as suggested above)
sick dis, failing during heat soak
sick coil, failing during heat soak (not likely that all 3 will fail at the same situation)
other electrical issue.

Had the exact same problem that you had and as stated above my check ball in the fuel pump was bad pressure would bleed down and I would have to cycle the key 2-3 times to build up pressure. Otherwise it would just crank and crank and crank. Check the fuel pressure at the rail with the key on enigne off and key on engine on. Not sure what the exact pressures are but a simple search will yield some results. Key on should be right around 30+ engine running should be 35 and WOT around 40

If you put the gas pedal all the way tothe floor while you are cranking it over does it start. It is possible it is flooding out. Flooring the gas pedal cuts off the injectors while cranking.

Mine does this fromtime to time on hot restarts.

btw, flooding at hot restart is almost always due to an injector that leaks down - the SHO motor is quite sensitive to flooding at start...

Thank you for some ideas. The water pump is about 2 years old. I thought it was the fuel pump so I put one in I did not think It would be a bad idea being the car had the original one. The car started great for about a week then the problem came back. I will try some of your ideas and will let you know what works. Thank you.

Yes, at some point I am going to send my injectors out to be rebuilt etc. Until then I will just deal with having to floor it occasionally on hot restarts.
