hot chip question

I drive a 96 that is bone stock and am wondering if my first mod should be a hotchip for the computer?
Now ive heard these chips work, and these chips suck so i am wondering whether it is worth it to spend that money on something that isnt that great
What kind of performance gains are we lookin at anyway?
And if not a hotchip for a mod which would anyone recommend?
