Hose next to thermostat housing?

Is this hose hard to replace? How can I get to it? Looks like it's bulging between the two clamps. The left side of the hose is attached to the thermostat which can't be taken off, at least not by me. I can't really tell what the right side of the hose is attached to, but I do see a bolt on the top (red arrow) I can't see a bolt on the bottom.

Any help would be appreciated.

I think you are talking about the hose that connects the 2 halves of the coolant 'spider' - it has 2 parts, one is bolted to the end of the front head and the other is bolted to the end of the rear head. It collects the coolant from the heads and circulates it either to the radiator or directly back to the water pump via the thermostat.

That hose is a royal pita to replace. You need to remove both parts of the 'spider' (3 nuts on each, iirc) and slip it off, then r/r the hose, then reassemble the 'spider'.

Good catch, that blowing would have ruined your whole day. Now is a good time to replace all your hoses, even if they look good on the outside. Just sayin since its drained.
Dont forget the oil cooler hoses up front.

Thanks for the replies, seeing the pic was a big help. The "O" ring behind the spider was expanded, I first said the **** with it and stuck in back in there, this was at around midnight. Sharknado sidetracked me for a couple of hours, but that movie was well worth it. After a good nights sleep, I had second thoughts and pulled it back off. Turns out, it was in two pieces. I got a replacement at NAPA, "O" ring number 72219. That was the number on the box that the guy pulled it out of. I haven't started the car yet so I'm not 100% sure it's going to work.

And I agree, having that hose blow would of been bad. I was back there changing out the heater hose along with all the other hoses when I noticed it. Prior to this, I didn't know that hose existed. After first seeing it, I tried to convince myself that it was supposed to look like that. But again, after a good nights sleep I thought otherwise and started this thread.

I would like to know if you were ever able to make that hose repair. If so, how did it go? how hard was it to get to nuts, take off and replace the housing #1, not the t-stat housing/cover. I have to get this same job done. Thanks

I changed that on my SHO preventatively when I pulled the motor, it had 250k on it, and was well worn out. Glad I did it then, as it was not in great shape.

Thankfully that hose is usually only changed once in the cars life...

After seeing 3d914's post with the diagram and actual pics, it was a walk in the park. Autozone sells the "o" ring and related gaskets in a kit for 15 bucks. Having that beforehand would of been nice. http://www.autozone.com/autozone/pa.../N-j1hpcZ9pdkd?itemIdentifier=225160_0_19374_ I thought I saw it on Shosource's website as well, but I couldn't find it again.

Since you have the car torn apart changing out the varies coolant hoses, seems like you might want to change out the VSS as well, its buried in the general area. I didn't think to do this.

Sorry Doug, I didn't mean to contradict you. I didn't see your post till I hit the submit button. I think 3d914's advise of leaving the hose loose saved me some headache. I used a screw type hose clamp instead of trying to reuse fords "spring" type hose clamp.
