Any of you turbo guys have any experience with these?

A friend of mine has offered me an hx35 that is slightly used but with zero play for a dirt cheap price. What do you all think? I know the 2.3 Ford guys have had a LOT of success with these turbos but I have also heard that they can be pretty inefficient.

Can't seem to find a map for it which would be very helpful in my decision....

shodoodmorris used one. i know that they are very reliable and rebuild kits are cheap and easy to do. Remember, these are made for big diesel trucks. so a moderately sized v6 is going to push it just fine.

im either going with this or a turbonetics 60-1

Yea I knew they were common on ******'s. Right now, I'm kinda torn as for ages I had planned on going the super charger route. I had read up all things blower and knew exactly what I wanted to do. But after getting some more info from people on here, i decided that doing a turbo set up would be way easier... Not to mention I know of a half dozen guys local who are the Chuck Norris' of turbo fabrication and are willing to help out in the install.

Guess its time to start re-learning everything again. :swing:

It's not the turbo I'd pick, but if I had a shot at a super cheap one in good shape, I'd take it. Shodood's car was running about 8 psi, it was definitely a huge improvement over stock. A bit laggy though.

Anyway, there's a map here, and this is a great site for figuring out the basics of turbocharging the SHO:

As a Cummins guy, and a 2.3 Ford guy, I know MUCH about the Holset turbos. They are very efficient, but an HX35 is not a good match for our engines! The HX35 has an EXTREMELY tall compressor map, meaning it is efficient while pushing big boost, and this is why they're popular with the 2.3 crowd, because we like big boost! Many of us have pushed 23+psi on stock engines, and they saw 15psi when they left the show room floor. In other words, normal boost levels for a 2.3 Ford are quite high for a SHO.

Here's the HX35 compressor map:
Hx35

If you wanted to run 15psi from an HX35 (~2.0 on the vertical axis at sea level, give or take for elevation) the turbo would hardly get spinning and never get anywhere near its best efficiency. Then it would move into the choke range quite quickly from there.

I was also looking at a h1c. How do you feel about that. Powersurge ran the h1c on his turbo 90

normal size or hybrid?? I think a 60-1 Hifi would be perfect.

i wanna see hybrid 62-1 or even 66 done. I think it would be suited well towards a street/strip build. Plenty of compressor and reduced lag from the small turbine.

What kind of lag did he have? What was his turbo pipe set up? Did he get any dyno numbers from that turbo?

im not going to be running much boost so a 62 might be too big for me

Oh, and another thing.... the OEM 12cm turbine housing will most likely be a bottle neck on most SHOs. If you MUST run an HX35, then I'd at least look into upgrading the turbine housing. Personally I'd look more toward an HX40.

HX35's are not the kind of turbos you want to run on a stock SHO motor. Like Merk said, you'll need to be pushing high boost to really get the full affect of the turbo.
It really depends on what you are looking for in your set up, but plan on looking for something a bit smaller on stock pistons. Find a decent T3/T4 and that should give you what you're looking for. Had a t3/t4 on my tbird which boosted at 2.5Krpm (on a 4banger) and hit peak boost around 3.5-4k (depends on the gear). Made great power for the time being but it couldn't push past 22psi.

Boost wasn't coming on fully until about 3500. He made his own pipes, turbo was mounted around where the ABS pump would go normally. 3 inch downpipe and exhaust. No actual dyno numbers, but estimated dyno numbers from a Veypor was 360-380 IIRC, and I don't suspect that to be too far off.

I only rode in it a few times, he'll be able to give you more specific answers if he comes on here.
