Holes in Intake?

When I had my throttle body(and intake) off I noticed if you look into the openeing there are 4 holes. They appear to be two sets that connect with each other.

Mine were clogged with sludge. I cleaned them out. Was I supposed to, and what are they for?

YES!! If I am correct those are for the Idle air bypass valve, and those passages often get sludged up.

The two upper 'nostrils' are from the IAB, and the lower two are from the EGR valve.

Yes, The top two are the IAB and the bottom are EGR. And I believe it is a good thing to clean them.

I have a pic of the cleaned ports but i've been too lazy to create a webpage to store pic and stuff. Maybe this will kick start me
