Hi all,

In April I bought a 1994 MTX SHO with 186k km's on it. I did an oil change @ 192000 km (every 8k kms).

I am now @ 196k kms and I have had to add 2 litres already (2 quarts). When I did the oil change I put in 4.5 quarts and added the rest of the last quart 1000 km later.

Why the **** is my car bruning so much oil? There are no noticible oil puddles where i park it and the exhaust does not have that telltale blue smoke.

That's not excessive oil consumption. I wouldn't lose sleep over it unless your SHO was using twice as much oil. Apart from slight, normal wear on your rings and valve guides the excess oil consumption could be from losing it through your spark plug wells as well as oil evaporation. Some oils evaporate more readily than others. You can try switching to Castrol GTX 10W/30 and see if your consumption goes down.

Although we don't like our cars to use oil, 1 quart per 1000 miles is considered normal by just about every auto maker. I think Mazda rotaries are allowed 1 qt per 500 miles. It's not a big deal, just a pain. My truck uses 1 qt every 200 miles. Now THAT'S a pain in the ass!

Hmmmm, my 89 takes 5.5 qts with a filter change.

It burns 1 qt every 1,000 miles. Not bad for almost 205K miles (not kms).

Sorry to dig up an ANCIENT post, but I was searching for some info about oil consumption and just felt I had to suplement the info about the rotary motors. While it is true that they CAN burn around 1 qt. every 500-750 miles, this is because they actually have a sort of oil injection, like on an old two-stroke motorcycle. Oil is injected to lubricate the seals on the rotors, and is burnt off (obviously).
