I saw your pics from a while ago with the engine with 120,000 with penzoil and the other with castrol... I was curious if an engine that was running penzoil, and you switched to castrol, would it then clean up the head and the rest of the engine within time?? I have no idea what the guy ran in the car before I bought it from him. Thanks for your time.

Doug, I believe if you run any type of motor flush (not oil additive) before your next oil change, that would help the transition to castrol.

I believe motor flushes are bad for engines. It will clean the engine by bringing down carbon and varnish into the oil pan which can clog the oil pump screen and therefore, starve your engine of oil.

if there is that much varnish in your engine, than the oil filters you are using are not adequate. I use the motorcraft FL1A and sometimes the Mobil 1 M1-301 filter over the FL 400S filter. My uncle is a firm believer of the stark & gunk motor flush. He has had not 1, not 2 but 3 engines deliver over 250k with once a year or more flushing. They were all pushrod V8's also.

The FL1A fits? I was just looking at it in Wal-Mart the other night, and if I remember correctly that is one big-ass filter. ****, compared to that of my late '92 ****** (which held 2.5 to 3quarts of oil), the FL400S is huge.

yes, the FL1A filter fits, and it is a monster. I have to put in 6+ qt's of oil just to hit the full mark on the dipstick. It's more surface area for filtration though, and the same price as the 400, so I'll pay for the extra quart or 2 if it gives me a piece of mind.

height wise I'd say they are identical, it's the diameter that they are different. I needed a totally different filter wrench than what I normally use.

I think you would be safer going straight to the Castrol GTX rather than the flush. It would be good to clean out the deposits as the flush claims to do, but it would be bad to lose some degree of lubrication with the solvent in the crankcase. Pennzoil didn't **** those engines, but it didn't keep them in the best condition either.

I think I'll give it a shot, even though I have the 400S sitting in my backseat right now. But putting 6+ qts. of oil in an engine designed for 5 (?) qts. would make me feel a little uneasy. I do like the idea of more filtering surface area, though.

Heh...700 posts for me!!! "I feel pretty..."

The FL1A won't fit an automatic car.

I just started running the "big one" in my car as well. With Castrol GTX of course.

It doesn't matter how much oil you have to add as long as you keep the level on the dipstick below the FULL hash mark. The dipstick is the final say on how much oil you need to put in the crankcase.

It is a good idea to pre-oil the filter, especially the larger volume FL-1A, before installing during an oil change. That prevents the long period of time it take sto fill the filter before the bearings start seeing the oil pressure after starting the engine. The filter doesn't have to be topped off with oil, any amount in the can will help shorten the time the engine turns without pressure to protect the bearings.
